Gas Cans In Roof Racks?
What does everyone use? Just a cheap plastic one from any store?
Or a Jerry Can? http://offroadrecovery.zoovy.com/cat...rrycansandacc/
What are you using it to fasten it down to the roof rack? How big of can do you guys use?

I've got three 5-gallon cans from wal-mart. I put them in my safari basket and tie them down with a couple ratchet straps.
Here's an old pic... just one can, and it's held down with bungee cords

Jack,
I notice its on its side... I want to do that as well. Has it ever leaked out any gas on its side? Probably not if you have the yellow snap on and the black lid securely tightened, but had to ask
btw, nice pic

89, I use jerry cans from Generator Joe.
I have links to his site and pics of my installation here.
These cans are modeled after the original German cans from WWII, and they will not leak, even on their sides.
Here's good reading.
Here's a few pics of the can on top.

Another Walmarter here! Get the tie down straps! Bunjee cords are not enough! The rear one was fine, but the one inside my spare got launched after I got a little excited on a whoopdedoo on that trip. I now have a minor ding with scratches all over it on my hood and a smaller one on my roof in front of the sunroof DOH! Won't make that mistake twice! The can was fine though.

Now you have one to match matt and I's... Though you need one on the side like us cool dent holders. If you look in that pic (that was after we hit that big hole the first time right? I had a little one from the first time around. Then it got bigger the second time around. But I did get through it!! with only about half (or less) the tread on my revos too! Oh well, I wouldn't change any of it. It was fun! The scratches from the can aren't deep at all, nothing a little coreycable action wouldn't fix!
edit: Your right on the dumb ass thing though. I havent heard that one yet. Though, your lucky it was a tree and not another car! Probably wouldn't even know your on top of it with those huge tires!

Would I want to do is get a jerry can or something similar and lay it flat in the basket, so its not sticking up. I have the loadwarriror... that way I won't worry about it snagging on any branches and it shouldn't be any higher than the basket it if was on its side.
Jerry can's should be fine on their side from what I read, right?!?!?

Just remember the heavier it is, the more important it is to synch it down. And be aware. If your running your stock cross bars of how much weight is on there. I busted mine on that trip. Probably from the same stunt. But for some reason, it was the rear one. Have yet to figure out why... Most of the weight was in the front (the spare). Idono... guess its time to put the yak cross bars up.

Corey, is there any way to get the yak cross bars back where the stock rack is? or does it have to go up over the sunroof? Thanks

Austin, you can run the Yak bars back aft on your stock Toy bars too, but it's still a weak link with the factory ones back there.
With the rack up front like I have it on Yak bars, it's very strong.
I had over 150 lb of camping gear and firewood up there a few years back.
It's the Yak towers with the Q clips or whatever they are calling it these days that give it the strength.

Yeah, I have it on the stock cross bars now, or did til they broke. I have some yak cross bars that I had on my volvo but I still like the location of the basket back on the roof... away from the sun roof. I am an avid sunroof user, so I was wondering if there was anyway to get the Qtowers in the stock rails or something...?

Yep, they sure do. They have load bar feet that mount in the factory rails. It appears that Yakima's rack configuration GUI is down. So, you may have to visit them later.
That would be your strongest option.

I got my jerry cans from here:
http://www.cheaperthandirt.com
At $9 a piece I grabbed 2. I think maybe they're out of the good NATO surplus versions cause the only ones I can find on there are old rusted FRENCH gas cans!
They do have these though...
