Thumbs up Future Ride Toyota FJ Cruiser

I just got the april MT and there is a article about the Toy 2006 retro-FJ. Its based off the old FJ40 and looks okay. I've seen stuff about this prototype in other mags/sites but this is the first one with a big write up. Plus they say is has the green light. The reason I'm posting it in here is that the article said it "will be built off a modified Tacoma pickup platform when Toyota launches it in '05." Engines are the same 2.7L four & 3.4L six. It also won't look as crazy as the prototype. Now I don't know about some of you but I'm excited again. Hopefully not excited like I was about the 2003 4Runner only to be disapointed...no offense to current owners. I just loved the way the 3rd gen looked, and the 2003 is not my thing. I have driven my gf crazy when I ask her "what do you think?" - she's not crazy about it either! I wanted Toyota to go the other way when the redesigned the 4Runr - something more rugged, less frills, and more based off the Tacoma (anyone else wish they could use the same lift kits?). Did I forget to mention cheaper? I was gonna buy one of the last 2002's but I missed my chance. Now if I wait till 2005 I might be able to get a FJ Cruiser.

I showed that article to my wife and said that it would be my next vehicle. She told me it was hideous and I'd get one over her dead body (she has a flair for the dramatic). I like it alot, but there will be alot of changes from the concept to the production rig (from what I read). They said the driving lights on the mirrors would stay most likely I wonder if we can mod the 2nd Gen mirrors to take driving lights? That would be a cool mod!!

No lockers?

I was just about to say "I'll take one!" But with no lockers? I don't know now.

I wish they had someone to stand next to it to scale the height.

Good idea. I hope it is not the size of a Tracker or Rav4.

To squell your concerns:

It stands at a intimidating 3 feet 6 inches.
the car is mainly made for hobbits and welsh midgets.

personally speaking, i'd rather go for the 'ol fj40 instead of the new redesign....

but until i find the right fj40.... the search continues!

I seen that last Friday at the Chicago Auto show. It was very cool, but its still a concept. I think there will be major changes before its released. I wasn't to thrilled about the interior either. It kindad reminded me of the interior of a Honda Element, very plain, and full of plastic.

I could see myself in a all black one - but only if I can get some lockers for it. They should really ditch the white top - too Mini Cooperish for my tastes.

Pics from the auto show

I'm not a fan of the blue color personally. I snapped these shots at the chicago auto show. While I was impressed with the rig, it seemed like Japan's answer to the Hummer's success. There were a lot of hummer and h2-like models on the floor.

I guess I was just excited that there will be yet ANOTHER Toyota SUV coming out. This one shouldn't be a car based pretender SUV or a Luxo $40K+ suv. I drive a Jeep Wrangler right now so it should be a step up without losing too much of that 4x4 telephone pole climbing appeal. I'm actually thankful that some of the crazy stuff won't make it to production. I bet one day there will be lockers made for it too. Wait...aren't there already lockers made for the Tacoma which they say this will be based off of?

I am glad to see Toyota has finally listened to us and developed another utilitarian(???) 4x4. I am also glad to see it based on my beloved FJ40s. I will be considering one of these when they come out!
