When I did this a few weeks ago, I took the spindle off, and took it into a shop to have the press work done. The shop said it was a Giant pain in the ass to do, so I could only imagine what it would be like for me to do it.

Then the cheap Advance auto bearing I used blew up... so three weeks later I took it to a toyota dealer to have them do it. With the spindle out it was 350 for parts and labor and tax, and also the cost of over nighting the parts.

Is there any way to get the backing plate/dust shield off to replace it without taking the bearing out of the spindle? Since the bearing and the hub face are two different parts, I didn't know if you could pull the hub out.....with the spindle, ball joints, and everything else still in place. I'm doing my brakes, and I can cut the nasty old dust shields off....but I have some brand new ones to put on....and I don't think I can get them on.

i remember someone did a write-up on toyota-4runner.org i think but he had to make some parts in order to seat the new seal without damaging the bearing and i believe that it took him like a couple of hours to do it himself the best thing to do is to get a new bearing and the seals and the large c-clip that goes inside the hub and take the spindle off yourself and take it to a shop that is the cheapest method bc it will cost you less than 100 buck to have them press the old out and the new in

and quicksilvr nope u cant replace them without pressing out the hubs and i just left mine off makes no difference at all just a lil more brake dust on the wheels

How do you know if you need new front wheel bearings? With a normal spindle its easy to just yank em off and eye ball them. But since they are sealed inside the knuckle whats the procedure to inspect them?

I semi- revived this thread to ask my question, doubt the OP will check back in. I suppose the only way to know if the bearings are bad for sure is if you have play in the wheel when trying to move it up/down or front/back by hand when it's jacked up. It is possible for bearings to be bad and NOT have any play....although I know alot of people don't believe it. Usually they get noisy either way.


I ended up using a cutting wheel to cut the thick steel ring holding my old backing plates on. The actual backing plates were so rusted.....I ripped them in half with my bare hands. And I did not put the new ones on....since it's impossible to do without removing the whole shebang. Too bad, cause now I have nice new backing plates that are going to sit around until I need new front wheel bearings.

Anyone know the average life span on the front bearings?
I always wonder about them.

Sounds dumb but............is there a way to force some grease in the joint side
behind the seal to extend their life?

My buddy has around 215,000 not so easy miles on his.....
33's and lots of wheeling. No outward signs of wear.

Yea, Ive heard 300k plus myself. Its rare that a runner owner has to do wheel bearing work.

My '99 has 286,000 on it now and I am getting a low roar out of the front driver's side.
