Front suspension questions: Wandering
Hey guys, I haven't posted in a while. It's good to see this forum is still thriving. Fairly recently I had OME 890 rear springs and 2" Daystar spacers with Tokico shocks installed on my '96 V6 4Runner. Along with this I had a new steering rack installed due to the mount being worn out due to my neglect in replacing the rotted out bushing (Expensive mistake). I had an alignment done after all this work. Since this was all done I am not very happy with the steering. I find the front suspension tends to bang over potholes, ruts etc. , and the steering feels like it wanders a bit on pavement grooves. I have a suspicion that part of the problem may be that I need to extend the panhard bar in the rear to correct the suspension geometry. Primarily I wonder if the rusty, sagging stock front springs with the spacers is really the way to go. I am looking at replacing them with the TRD Tundra coils. I have researched the part numbers etc.
Do any of you have any thoughts about whether these upgrades would be the cure to these ailments? I am also wondering if anybody could post a measurement for me: The distance from the bottom of the fender well to the center of the hub with the Tundra lift (preferably without the additional 3/8 " spacer, but either or) on a V6 4Runner. With my current setup the distance is approximately 22 " . I am hoping that the Tundra coils would yield about that height, and not too much more, to keep things balanced with the rear. hey fellow vancouverite,
im sorta having similar problems as u. except mines lifted 3" OME springs. I know u changed urs but my steering rack bushings are loose so im upgrading to polyurethane ones this weekend, im hoping thats the culprit.
what kind of tires are u running? mine got worst after switching to M/T's.

Hey there, neighbour. I have good tires: Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armour with low kms: 31 x 10.5 " . I was running some ProComp Xterrains before in 12.5 " width and they were as bad as you might expect.

Is my 2000 4runner with TRDs in front w/o any spacers and 890s in back. I think the stance is perfect. The back is up just a little.
The measurement that I get is ~22". As you can see, my 4runner has the bigger flairs, they wrap under the stock fenders so your measurement may be a little more.

Hi, I know my front suspension was more prone to "thumping" over potholes and railroad tracks, etc. because of the front spacers. I have the 2.5" daystars. It really takes away some of the travel because it preloads the spring.
Like when you go over a bump while you are braking. Less travel=harsher ride.
Switching up the TRD coils will take that away. I plan on upgrading soon also.

Thanks for the info guys. Gerdo, it sounds like the Tundra springs will lift me to just the right height that I'm looking for. Thanks for the measurements and the pic. Your truck looks great. Those are the 4wd springs right? When I get the springs put in, I will be sure to have them check the balljoints and bearings, along with another alignment. Hopefully all will be good at that point.
