Front end click/gear slap 2001 4Runner

My 2001 4Runner makes a loud click noise under the following conditions:

I back out of my driveway,my initial application of brakes produces a loud "click or gear slap noise" in the front end. 2nd application is normal. Now if I shift into Drive the first application of brakes gives me the same noise. Driving the vehicle and braking after that produces no front end noises. It only happens when applying brakes after changing from Drive to Reverse and visa versa, and only the first application of brakes. Has anyone else experienced this? Nothing is loose underneath.

Thanks, John

You may want to check the Brake Shims for the calipers as I know Honda had a problem like this. Noise after 1st application after changing directions.

The problem was actually brake pad shift. Lexus has a service bulletin that I spotted on one of their forums. Solution is to apply caliper grease to contact area of caliper and pads. I really didn't think this would work but it sure did. I bought some raybestos synthetic caliper grease, greased the ends of the pads and contact area on caliper and clicking is completely gone.
