front axle shaft
the other day i had a major trail break down and dislocated my front lower ball jointand it pulled the axle out and ripped the c.v. boot. so i bought a new boot and it was the wrong size. it turned out that the axle was aftermarket and was smaller some how. so im going to buy a new axle today for 52 dollers but need the core from the old one. what tools do i need to take the axle out from the knuckle, more specicifically the size of the big socket?

The socket size is 36 or 37 mm.
Once you get the hub nut off, whack the end of the axle shaft with a rubber mallet real hard, and it should dislodge from the spindle.
On the diff side, use a large flat head screw driver or pry bar. Wedge it inbetween the axle shaft (its really called a half shaft), and the diff, and pry it off. It usually will pop off quite easily. You'll feel a pop too. Some diff fluid will also come out so put a drain pan underneath.
You'll then have to move the spindle out of the way. Either by removing the 4 bolts on the bottom that hold it to the lower ball joint, or removing the upper A-arm bolt, which is not as easy IMO. I usually take off the 4 bottom bolts, and when putting the bolts back in using blue lock tite.
