Free (brand new) O2 sensor for some 2nd gen. 4runner owners
This came up in a previous post, but I thought I would make a new thread for more exposure. I recently got a brand new O2 sensor install from the dealer for absolutely free. This was for my 95 4-runner (3.0L V6, auto, 2nd generation). Did the dealer want to do this...no. But they had to because here is what my owners manual says on pg. 164 (note in particular the part for the O2 sensor)
I'm not sure what all years or models have this printed, but its worth checking anyway since the sensor alone is over $80. Also, pg.159 (Schedule A) and pg. 162 (Schedule B) both say to replace the sensor at 80,000k. So, if your 4runner's manual has the above line at its got about 80k on it, lucky you, you get a free O2 sensor

My '89 had a replacement program, but only at 80K miles (+- a few at dealer discretion). I tried to argue that they should cover me since it had never been done, but they said 'No, it's 80k miles, not 180K'.

LOL. Seems like they still should have done itt though. Mine had 96k on it. A lot less than 127k and 180k I know, but the main point is that Toyota replaces the sensor once for free during the lifetime of the vehicle so long as it has at least 80k on it. Shouldn't matter if its exactly 80k or if its up to 300k. A guaranteed O2 replacement once during the life of the vehicle is just that. If the Dealers were going to be real technical they could say a 4runner with 80,000.1 miles doesn't qualify, which would be ridiculous. Also, there is no expiration date printed in the owners manual for the service campaign. If it were me and my dealer said no, I would call Toyota directly to get the facts straight. Again my $0.02.

I'm definately going to talk to the dealer here soon...possibly today after school. I will just tell them in its the manual and as far as both of us know it has NEVER been done so it is due for one and I need to get it FREE.

Anyone have a spare manual? I really have taken a hit in mpg lately and am sure that the o2 sensor is to blame. I bought the 4runner with 122K and it now has 130k and i doubt the previous owner ever did this. Great find! If no one has a manual, do you think this scanned picture will persuade them to replace it? Thanks, young Andrew

Cool, my manual has it. I may give them a call sometime soon as well.
szf2: how many miles you got on your 4runner? I'm not sure if they'll do mine, I've got 101,000.

I called the dealership and he said that it was a misprint in the manual but that they had to honor it. he said i have to have the manual so they can copy it and send it in, and my check engine light has to be on for them to replace the o2 sensor. My dealer sucks.

They have to honor this. Geez, I don't know where the manual for my 91 runner is. It was in the glove compartment, and it's gone now. Prolly in the house somewhere. Now I have to go digging for it.

So i should call the regional office? I dont have a manual so do you think that this will set me back? I told the guy at the dealership the check engine light isn't always triggered when the sensor goes bad but he said it'd have to come on for them to do it. The part about xeroxing the manual to send into Toyota seems like bs but he stressed the part about me having a manual which i don't at this point. I might call anpther yota dealership 30 miles away...i really need this done because of the waning mpg and don't have the funds by any means to replace it myself. Once again thanks for the great find and wish me luck with the dealers.

I think there was a thread in the last 2 months about getting a new manual for free. Seems like it was in from the Toyota printing office in CA. BUT, the new or reprints may have deleted pg. 164.
