They say it has new tires, and a new clutch. I haven't seen it yet, probably tomorrow. What engine is in this? How difficult or pricey is the headgasket repair? What should I offer, if it looks ok?

Buy it! I think they came with the 22r, but I'm not sure, somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

If it's been in CA all its life, there shouldn't be a problem, but up here, the 80s toys are nortorious for rust. check the box, the frame and the floorboards specifically. I believe it should have the 22r which is a very very strong engine. It may have the 20r, I'm not sure when the transition happened. That would make a great bush beast.

What are you going to do with it Rob?? Wouldnt you rather put $600. into your truck? Or do you want to build a real rockcrawler?
If you do get it Steve can do the engine for you--he has the same one and knows it very well.

Wheel the piss out of it.

Not really, anything else(front locker, crawler gears) will just take me on trails that will F-up my daily driver. Plus Solid axle!!

I'm not even sure it's 4x4, the lady doesn't know and couldn't check right now.I told her to describe if it had 2 shift knobs and I got 2 different answers. I'm just looking because it is quite cheap for a trail rig, we'll see.

If it's not 4wd, it certainly isn't worth it if you're looking for a trail rig.

I understand--for the last year or so I have driven by an 85 on Mission Gorge. It never moved and I kept wanting to see if they wanted to sell it. I held back thinking the longer it was there the cheeper I could get it for. But a week or so ago I drove by and it was gone
