flowmaster 40 series on 4 banger

I wanna put a flowmaster 40 series on my 87 pickup. My biggest fear is that it's going to sound too much like a ricer. If anyone else has this setup, what do you think of it?

Those usually sound pretty deep. We have a page with a bunch of sound bytes of various mufflers and the 4Runners they're installed on. I'm looking for it as I type this...

Edit: Here ya go... http://www.pnw4runners.com/exhaust/exhaust.htm

thats what i did. couldnt tell much of a differance, so i had the muffler shop weld up 3inch piping from the muffler back, sounds really good now. do 2 1/4inch from the manifold back, and 3 inch from the muffler back and it should sound pretty good with a 40 series.

I have a 40 series on my 22R and I really like the sound. It does have a little bit of that ricer 'buzz' a really high rpms, but cruising around 2000 it sounds MEAN. This is a relatively loud exhaust setup, it definately gets the attention of everyone around!

Mine sounds awsome, like a v8 at idle but screams like a race truck when I hammer it,but still with a deep rumble. It isn't too loud at all.

I have 40 w/ reson. I like the sound now. Deeper sound and more mellow, not as ricey!

I have an 18" magnaflow, great sound, but sounded loud on the highway and kind of ricey at high rpm. Then I got a 15" allied resonator which I turned the "quiet way" instead of the "performance way" and it still hace a nice deep medium-loud tone during city driving, nice and quiet on the highway and I lost that ricer sound at high rpms.

Put a flow through muffler like the magnaflow on it, it will sound much better, It's What LC and the likes use in their kits, and they have a much nicer sound on 4 cylinder engines then then flowmasters do

I had one on my 87 2wd. I had a cam in it as well and it idled really lumpy. It did not sound like a ricer but it sounded like a 4cyl if you know what I mean. It was loud, definetly makes cops want to look at you. I had the Downey header and a Crane cam with 2 1/2" with no cat all the way back. I wouldn't recommend this cause I lost some torque. What I did next was put it back to 2 1/4" all the way back with a stock type muffler. The truck ran much better all the way through the rpm range.

Are you not recommending the 2 1/2" exhaust, or running no cat, or both?

Resonator is an empty chamber, larger diameter than the exhaust pipe that allows the exhaust to expand a bit before it exits the tailpipe.
