Flexible Air Hose to Air Filter Question

My brother had an 86 celica and i remember him rigging a flexible air hose from the air filter going down to the front air dam. This caused cooler air to be forced through the tubing and to the air filter. I was thinking of doing this to my 93 4runner but wanted other peoples opinion. Has anyone done this? Would it really work?
Thanks in advance
