Which flares work, confusing??

Hi all, heres the skinny I have a 96' 4runner. When I bought it, it had factory running boards and no fender flares. I can see in the fenders the holes left from the flares so I assume it had the black flares to match the running boards at some point. Well the running boards are gone, and now I have a TJM T17 and need flares to match the bumper. Which flares are compatible now with no more running boards. I have looked at the bushwacker extend a flare which seem to be the only available for 3rd gens and the specs say, for limiteds with flares, with factory running boards, or SR5 with factory running boards. Do you need the running boards back on to fill the gap at the bottom? or do they fit the lines of the fender just fine?? If I went factory, which flares do I need?? I did a search and only became more confused. So some insight would help. Thanks much.

Matt

You dont need running boards to fill in the gap. They sell boots for an extra $150 if you want to use the running boards, so with out them, its cheaper.

Performance Products makes their own brand for the 4runners, but, I haven't seen anyone use them before. I am tempted to buy some as I've wanted some to help cover the wide tires I have and no flares. They are pretty cheap.

Another brand are the xenon that sell on eBay. Just do a search there and they'll pop up.

Hey thanks, I looked at EGR brand flares too, anybody have any luck with them?? No drill is appealing, however how easy they will get ripped off is another.

Ive got the extend a flares and they bolt up great to the factory holes. They also go all the way down so your running boards will not fit. I dont know if they make a set that will work w/ them running boards though.

Oh yeah definitely dont want the running boards, they are long gone (see dump) As for EGR just google them there are 101 different places that sell them online. The website is lost on me right now.
