Fitting a 285 in the spare tire area on a 3rd gen?

I'm preeeety certain I've seen peep posted that they did this - but I'm having a DEVIL of time fitting my 285 yhomo geo a/t under there!
suggestions>?
I've ground down the hitch area a good bit - KINda sort gets under there - but I"m afraid it's gonna rub on the panhard bar - tis such a tight squeeze.
remove the hitch - or at least the center portion of it? That would increase my departure angle......

Remove the hitch, or deflate the tire. I think thats your only option.

Yup, I can get mine under there without the hitch, and even then its a bit of a squeeze. I usually put the spare in the back cargo area when wheeling to give me more clearance underneath.

also keep in mind... not all 285s are created equal.

When I run mine underneath i have to air it down to about 12 lbs. but make sure when you raise it into place that it doesn't rub on the panhard.

actually, it really doesn't matter if it rubs the panhard or not. the panhard has much greater forces exerted on it than what the tire can resist. that axle weighs enough that the tire pressed against the panhard cannot keep it from drooping as it should.

Just curious, would a 265/75/16 fit up under there without clearance issues (with a hitch)?
