I bought one of the $9.99 units off ebay. Its the cone filter K&N Knock off. I've noticed considerable gains. Plus it gives the truck that nice deep sound

3rd gens owners generally just do a deckplate mod and get the same results with an Amsoil or K&N drop-in combination and is easy and cheap to do. I think I spent 13 bux.

I have a 3rd gen, but I don't know what the deck plate mod is? Can you explain a little more.

thanks

Rather than explain it all over again.... You can run a search on deckplate mod...or you can go to the Tech write-up section (Jacksonpt did a great write up on it)

I did the airbox mod on my 2nd gen, and it was a marked improvement over stock. (I have a k&n drop in filtercharger)

I had the FIPK and what piece of poop. It sounds real deep and throaty, but it is NO good on my 3rd gen. After a couple hundred miles it threw my CEL and no matter how many times i cleaned my MAF the light came back.
Save yourself money and go with an Amsoil drop in and deckplate mod.

Sounds to me like you had a maf problem. I've had mine on for about 30k miles, and havent had on problem, expect it likes to suck in water when u get in the deep stuff, but thats obvious.

IF you are going to be doing a lot of offroad in wet areas, do the deckplate, the open airfilter is no good.

I had a FIPK but switched to a stock box with the deckplate mod. power is about the same both ways, so save your money and just do the deckplate and ISR mods.

Deckplate mod and Amsoil filter is by far the cheapest and most effective way to mod your 3rd gen.
.....skip the FIPK like most on here have done.

I've got the FIPK and I really like it. Makes the 4runner sound a little deeper and has helped some with power. Kind of expensive though (I think I paid $230) so if the deckplate mod really works as well as everybody says it does than I'd probably look into it if I were you.

The FIPK did not work in MY 4runner. I am not saying that it doesn't work. What I am saying is that for some reason it seems to be hit or miss if the FIPK is a positive upgrade. As soon as i pulled it off and cleaned the MAF, I have never had another problem--that was 15k miles ago. Just my $.02
