after spending 5 hours waxing my truck, i'm in no rush to see road grime get slung up on it from my wider rims. when i'm off-road, i couldn't care less... but when i'm on road, it's just annoying. so i've found 3 sets and need help choosing:

1. Bushwacker Extend-a-Fender - seems to be the popular choice among you guys.

2. Warn 4x Flares - i honestly can't tell the difference between these and the Bushwackers.

3. Performance Products Flares - the only set of the bunch that doesn't require drilling. a little more expensive though.

i'm leaning more towards 1 and 2, but i'd still like everyone's feedback. what would you get and why?

I don't thing Perf makes them unless you have a 3rd gen?
OK, I see they do. Just looked in my catalog.

They make them for '89 to '95 trucks, but not the 2nd gen 4Runners.

I have had mine now for a few years, and they have been trouble free.

Most scratches I have got from off roading come off with the Porter cable buffer with ease.

I don't know if Bushwacker makes dull (versus glossy) black flares, but I'd go for those.

I wish I had them instead of my ltd. flares. My last trail ride included scratches & paint removal from my color-matched flares. If I'd had the dull black ones, I wouldn't care at all. Not that I'm really concerned about this anyway. But I am learning through experience, one scratch/dent at a time.

Go for the Bushwackers. I've had mine for years and they are definitely troublefree. BTW, I have the matte black ones.

Go with the Warn. They stick out farther than the Bushwackers and look nicer. I had them on my 94 pickup and would replace the Bushwackers on my 4Runner on a heartbeat.

I have factory flares so I am not really the authority on the subject... I would say go with the Bushwackers. Everyone here seems to be pretty happy with them.

I know it is only a matter of time before UKMYERS chimes in here. He just installed his Wackers...

my votes for bushwhackers! i think they look the best, im getting some myself. unless you are planning on getting wider tires, and a law or something says you need to have them covered, id get the bushs for sure

Perf Prod is overpriced, but I'm all about the no-drilling method, IF they hold and are as tough as the bushwackers. If you don't mind drilling go for the BW's.

wow, i'm glad i saw a picture of the Warns b/c i didn't know they stuck out that far. i don't need that much protection so i think i'm gonna go with the Bushwackers.

just one question though. some of you are saying that there's 2 different versions of the bushwacker: dull and glossy. the website i'm buying from, Central 4wd, had just one option. i'd rather have the glossy ones rather than the dull ones. i know Corey got his from Central and his look like the glossy ones so i'd probably get those, right?

Central should be able to get you either I would think if you call them up.

The way they set them up for 2nd gen 4Runners is two ways.

The glossy ones have to be bought in two sets.
The fronts are universal being they fir the 2nd gens, and '89 to '95 trucks.

For the rear, there are two parts #s for either truck or 4Runner, you can't use either on others aplication in the rear.

The matt finish ones for the 4Runner only come as a complete set of four.

For your truck though, I'm not sure, so it would be best to call Central.

And mine are the gloss ones.
The one advantage to the gloss ones is you can use them as a shaving mirror when you are out camping if you left your shaving mirror at at home.

But if I got fender flares all that classic Toyota rust would be covered up and I wouldn't be as certain that I was really driving a Toyota
Just gave my '85 4 Runner its first bath in about a year. Darn thing's gonna get spoiled LOL!

I'm going to need a set of flares soon. Rocks still flip up daily on my doors. I think the Bushwackers look really good. Where do you have to drill to mount? Is it in the side of the fenders or inside the lip where the interior plastic liners mount? How much do the Buswackers cost and where did you buy? Thanks

I have the Bushwacker Extend-a-fender flares. I cracked my left rear one though on the 198 trail at Evans Creek, so I might not have them for much longer. They are pretty durable for the most part. However, none of the "dimples" that they molded in as drilling points really lined up with my fender. I think that since I am going to have to replace them, I am going to get the "Cutout" flares. BTW on the 3rd gen pickups, the guys at Central quoted me $1000(they said that they would have to cut the fenders as well as the liners and reshape the edges back to a factory sort of folded edge) installed~then they looked in the book and told me nevermind~the cutouts don't require cutting at all at least on the 3rd gen pickups (and 2nd gen 4Runners?) I thought that it was weird and I opted for the extend-a-fenders instead.
