feasibility of auto to 5speed swap on a '86 turbo
locally there is a 86 4runner turbo forsale for $1700... its got 170000+ miles is Sr5, non degital dash and is an auto.... is the EFI dependant on the auto trany in any way? is an auto to 5speed swap possible? i know i would need to plumb a clutch no worries there.... it's just the stuff with the computer i know nothing about...

thanks i have searched, here and elsewhere, not much luck... i know the swap is possible with the non turbos but i haven't found anything [info] for a turbo...

yes its possible and very easy to do, i did it on my 85 with a 22rte the turbo makes no difference, i went with a w-56 tranny b-cuz its the most common. you can try to get an r151 but they are harder to find and the 22rte doesnt have enough power to make it neccessary to get one. basically al youll need to do is take out the auto and put in the manual. its a straight swap the only cutting you need to do is for the shifters and youll need to drill holes for the clutch master cylinder. the crossmembers are the same the drivelines are the same you can use the same ECM it wont know the difference. its a major improvement also, IMO i think it was a bad idea for toyota to stick an auto behind the 22re.anyway hope this helps ya some.

85Turborunner nailed it with his post. I did this swap about 3 years ago on my 85 extended cab 4X pickup. It was a pretty straightforward swap. The easiest way to cut the holes in the firewall for the clutch mastercylinder is to make a template. I assume you have a donor truck; if so, cut a piece of the firewall out and use that. If not, find any Toyota truck or runner of the same body style in a pick-a-part type wrecking yard and cut a piece of the firewall out.
There is a plug that you unplugged from the auto that has to be jumped. You should be able to search here or some of the other boards for a step by step guide. I wrote one on offroad.com, if they are still around.
Another advantage to this swap is that a lot of the trucks with autos came with 4:30 to 1 gears in the diffs. Good luck. You will love the difference in performance.

The turbo trucks did come from the factory with R151, which is the same as for the V6. The bellhousing might be trickey to find though. I agree that w-56 will probably be fine, and they are a lot easier to handle (lighter, smaller).

im planning to do the same swap. Ive got an 86 4runner 22-rte with the auto tranny and digital dash... when i posted on marlins forums i didnt get much advice on the topic... is this swap something that can be done by the everyday mechanic whos a bit more capable thant he everyday guy or is this gonna be too much for me to handle? sorry to hijack...

im by no means a professional mechanic and i had no trouble with the swap,its more of a pain taking the auto out than putting the manual back in. its good to have a second set of hands tho.

I agree with TurboRunner, yotaboy. I'm no professional mechanic either. I used a floor jack to lower the auto/transf combo to the floor. I used two young adult sons to stab the new trans/transf combo back in. It's too bad you can't use the transfercase from the auto, but it is a chaindrive and totally different and not as strong. Don't be afraid of this swap. You will love the difference in performance and in mileage.

well i think im going to do this swap as soon as i have the funds.. i got a couple of buddys that'll help removing the tranny and everything. How hard was it to install all the clutch linkage and that stuff, does it just bolt into factory holes? Or do i need drill... i do know that i will need to drill holes to mount the master cylinder.. you guys dont happen to have any pics of the swap do you? Thanks for the info .
