Factory Tag.....worthless
As I have found out from working on my 4runner this tag is pretty worthless other then VIN and tranny code. I thought I had the smaller rotor and calipers, no, I have the 16" versions-S13WM, Don't have 3.909 gears, I have 4.100....Dealer upgrades I guess.
Not that I'm complaining, much, but if this is a dealer upgrade then other than the Car Sales Sticker, that everyone usually throws away, how would someone know what they really have, they should attach an updated Tag somewhere that overides what the factory sent out....
At this rate I would have ordered the wrong rotors, and now I can do a rear axle swap so I can get a e-locker.
Anyway.....

I'm not to educated on when things are added as options, in the factory or at the dealership...or some somewhere in the middle.

Well after some digging online I found out you can get a vehicle inquiry report done by any toyota dealer service/parts person, its pretty much a copy of the window sticker. Called just now and he faxed it over and found out a lot about my vehicle I suspected. First this thing cost a lot MSRP...$34,203.00.....Upgrade package #4....which included the 16" wheels...13" brakes....and 4.100 rear diff gears....
For other wondering what you your car has...call your local dealer and ask for a vehicle inquiry report.

If it's 4wd than both sets are the same. oh yeah and as you found out, the door sticker is pretty much worthless when it comes to tires and wheels. my T100 came with factory 31's but my sticker still says 235's. The window sticker lists all the options that came equipped on the vehicle when it was delievered to the dealer. dealer added options are not usually put on the factory window sticker.

yeah, the vehicle inquiry report is pretty handy! had it done for a few of my Toyotas over the years.
similarly, my door jam sticker in my 90 truck, my 90 4Runner, and my 97 4Runner all say I have 225/75R15 tires and then proceeds to list the tire pressures for that tire, when infact my 90 Pickup and 4Runner have the 31" tire option and my 97 4Runner came factory with 265/75R16 tires....
why??? I cannot think of any logical explanation for not putting the proper tire size on the sticker..... especially for years and years of production....

While were on this factory sticker/ 16inch rims and larger brakes issue.....my door sticker says my truck should have 15's but I got the 16's with larger brakes...Not ALL 4Runner's with 16's have the larger brakes. A co-worker of mine witnessed two men in our compound (2500+ vehicles) remove the 16inch wheels off the written off 4Runner and switch them to a 1999 Tacoma that they were in and put the 15inch's wheels off the Tacoma back on the written-off 4runner :O. My co-worker (tow truck operator) thought for sure they were half-a$$ed on and the vehicle wouldn't even roll.....but sure enough the 4Runner rolled into the auction yard no problem with 15's.
My question is....the caliper on the 16's JUST touchs the 15inch rim along the top point(s) of the caliper.....can you just grind them down just a tad to make them fit? Sometimes the caliper is a mere half/inch away from the wheel. As long as it spins I should be fine right >? My friend has brand new BFG TA's with powder-coated factory15inch rims off his Tacoma...for 400$ I want them...i just don't want to change out the brakes if I don't have to....
