extremly bad gas milage
Looking for some suggestions. I have a 2000 4runner with 400,000km, I used to get 450/km to a tank, in the last few weeks i know get 250/km to a tank. I have a KN air filter which is clean. Fuel filter hasn't been chagned in a while so that is my next step. Just looking for any other simple causes. My compression was not the greatest about a yr ago possible that a cylinder has gone. (sorry about the km thing us canadians you know0

I'd think you'd know if a cylinder wasn't working properly...
Is your fan running all the time? I know it sounds odd, but mine is and I've noticed a *considerable* drop in mileage. Enough to where replacing w/ electric fan will pay for itself in a few months.

But on the mileage....
Just got my own '99 and it's mileage isn't very good either. So here's my to do list....
1. Clean the MAF. The excess oil from K&N filters (and other brands too) coats the wires in the MAF, attracts dirt and gives faulty readings. Toss the K&N while you're at it and go back to the paper element or at least a foam-type element. K&N breathe better than stock, but test after test show they let in more fine dirt. I tossed mine on my '95 after noticing that I could see pinholes of daylight. Previous owner of my '99 used a K&N, so my MAF gets cleaned today.
2. Change your plugs. Folks here like NGK & Densos, but I've done over 100K between changes on Bosch Platinum +4's on the '95. Still haven't decided what I'm going to put in the '99 today.
3. Change the fuel filter. Toyota says it's a lifetime filter. Take it from a guy that's changed the FF a couple times. It ain't. When you change it, it will leak the brownest crap out one end.
4. Swap in some dino oil into the crankcase and AutoRX your engine. Do the whole treatment, then swap in a good, synthetic oil (Castrol Syntec does not qualify). The AutoRX cleans out a lot of the crap out of your engine so it can run the way it ought to. The synthetic really makes a difference (about 1mpg) in how your engine runs. I've used nothing but in all my cars since an '89 Corolla.
5. Swap out the tranny, transfer case, front & rear diff oil with a good synthetic. It gained me about 1 mpg on the '95.
6. Go to your Magnaflow muffler dealer and order the longest one they make and get it installed. It'll have a low, quiet rumble, slightly louder than stock, and let the engine breathe as efficiently as possible with stock manifolds.
7. Make sure your tires are running at least at the recommended pressures, maybe a bit more (I go as high as an un-scientific 32 PSI...Not sure whether you use Pascals, Atm's, or KGM's or I'd do the conversion for you)
All of this should cost less than about $200 (American). I think that's about $25,000 pesos or about $63,000 CDN.
After that, check your mileage a couple tanks and repost.

My '99 has been only getting 14mpg (only had it about 6 weeks) and I'm cleaning the MAF today and am using a brand new OEM air filter so I'll post my results as soon as I burn through this tank.
