Exhaust....what to do

Thinking about a custom 2.5 or bigger exhaust on my 99 4runner v6 5spd. looking for suggestions on a high flow cat, good muffler which is not to loud, but is aggressive. and possibly splitting to two pipes out the back sides. i was going to consider straight out the back by the tail gate, but heard that its a bad choice due to suckingthe fumes right back in your rig. Im new to this forum, and was just trying to get some feedback

Can't tell you much other than a good muffler to get. I just put the 18" Magnaflow on my 3.4L Taco. It's not too loud and still has an aggressive sound. No ricer sound coming out of that muffler. I'm sure others will chime in about a high flow cat. Oh yeah, before anyone else says it... try the search function up top and type in "high flow cat" or exhaust... you'll get more info. G'luck... lates!

Oh yeah... I think if you split the tail pipe after the muffler you're just going to lose power. I'd keep it to one and run it out the side (like stock).

Edit: Oh, you don't need to get the 2.5 unless you have a Super Charger. The best and most economical thing you can do is just cut off your existing muffler, keep the stock 2.25 piping, and have a new muffler welded on with a new tail pipe (get a shop to weld this stuff on). I ended up paying $120 for parts and labor (I did a turn down right after the muffler but I also have a Taco so I don't have to worry about exhaust in the cab).

I believe our 3rd gens exhaust is already 2.5. At least mine was.
Any bigger than that and you lose power.

I think the 3rd gens are all 2.25 inch....some people measure 2.5 inch because the tip actually flairs out to 2.5 inch, but the rest of the pipe should be 2.25 inch.

I got the 18 inch 5x8 oval and it sounds nice. I does drone at around 1800rpm a bit. Some here don't seem to mind at all, but I was a bit annoyed at first. I've gotten used to it now.
