I've been doing a little thinking and minor research (and yes a search on here) concerning an exhaust for my 3.0. I'm not concerned with sound but more so with performance and MPG (although I acknowledge it is cost prohibitive technically to go out and do an exhaust in the name of MPG) on top of helping move heat away from under the hood for reliability reasons. I will run it all in 2 1/4" pipe from the manifold back.

I am leaning towards a Borla Turbo Muffler. Around $120-150 bones USD.

Now I'm thinking about a cat. I try to stick with OEM whenever possible and I don't want to get a junk cat or something that doesn't last. My understanding of the 3.4 is that it has a 2.25" exhaust stock and I was wondering if you thought it would be worthwhile to put a Tacoma 3.4 cat on my truck since the exhaust size should match up or if you feel strongly in the aftermarket high flow cats on the market and if you could recommend a worthwhile brand that has performed and lasted successfully for you. Are there any logistical issues with this? Are the O2 sensor placements, and the like the same on the 3.4 casts as the 3.0 ??

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I got a Magnaflow (Carsound) High-flow cat for my ZJ, and it was only $85. FAR cheaper than the OEM one. Just a thought, I don't know if it's the same for Yotas

No, I don't think going to a 3.4L cat would be beneficial. The only way it might be is if you had a pellet-type cat and were going to a honeycomb type (which I am pretty sure you don't have a pellet one anyway). Replacing a fully-functional stock cat will not do much for you, if anything. However, if I did need to replace mine, I would go with the Car Sound cat like Ryan did. Best deal going is on ebay. I got a 2.5" for my old Turbo Celica for $57 shipped. Midas welded it on for $85. Not bad at all.

Thanks for the points guys, I appreciate it. I would like to mention that cost isn't as much of an issue as getting a quality unit that does it's job well and won't hinder the reason I am getting the exhaust IE increased flow ability.

From the little bit of reading I've done supposedly most stock cats are "made to last the life of the vehicle." However it does mention that things like burning oil can foul up cats, however mine only burns a small bit (and it is synthetic) on start up but once the seals swell I don't think anything gets by.
What I'm getting at is I think an exhaust replacement may coincide with a ring job or a short block rebuild perhaps sometime down the road to give the new cat a fresh start. Or we'll see...my stock exhaust works great as is. The muffler, and pipes are all new, the cat is original and stock and it's in fine shape.

the dealer is from PA; henschel & sons, or best auto parts or something.

they sent me the wrong part at first, but sent a replacement quickly and took care of the shipping both ways so it didn't cost me anything extra.

I got a brand new 2-1/2" cat off E-bay for $24 but I'm debating whether I should use it or look for a 2-1/4" instead. Don't pay more than $40 for a cat, they pop up on Ebay all the time for $39 on down for a quality name brand cat. You would still need to get the Toyota flanges welded on and you need to check the overall length to make sure it will fit. But I think the Tacoma cat is a good alternative since they have the flanges and are 2-1/4" so they will outflow the stock 2" cat no matter what.
