Exhaust manifold cracked, should I just install header?

My girl has my truck 2 states away (visiting family) and the ticking has become louder. She took it to her fathers mechanic and he is saying that the exhaust manifold is cracked and that it's in my best interest to replace it. He wants to charge $200-$300.

My question is, would it be a big deal for her to just pass on it and drive it back home? Do we run much risk driving it that far (about 1000 miles) with a cracked manifold? I can get a downy header for less than $300, I'd rather spend it on something like that over a stock manifold.

This is for a 1999 2.7 Tacoma 4x4.

Depending if your two states away the size of california or two states away the size of new hampshire, but, I think she'd be okay driving it home. I drove my old truck for 1000s of miles with a cracked manifold, and the only problem was decreased power.

shouldn't you figure out why the manifold cracked in the first place?

These manifolds are known for cracking...driving it home shouldn't be a problem and honestly I wouldn't pay anyone to fix it. There really isn't a whole lot to replacing it yourself even if you did decide to go with the header. Having tools is the biggest thing, you'll need a heck of a breaker bar to get the bolts off but thats about it.

Good Luck! If you decide to do it yourself...PM me for further help if you need it

Mine's been cracked for about a year. $200-300 is way to much to replace it. My mechanic is only charging me $70.

ya you can drive it you just have slight power lose and ya thats way to much to fix it. You can get a header for that much.

As others have said it will be OK to drive. Another vote to go with the header
