i'll start by saying i've spend lots of time in the archives, 500 exhaust pipe hits and so far can't find what i need. i'm finishing the cat back and i'd like advice on whether the new pipe (2.25) on my 94 p/u should follow the stock path out the side behind the rear tire, or should i take it straight out back. is it true that if i take it straight out back that fumes could be sucked back in the slider rear window? looking for performance, sound is secondary.

the fumes are gonna be sucked to the area with lowest pressure...

In my 4Runner, I cant seem to NOT suck fumes in the back window no matter WHERE I put the exhaust.

i put mine out the side where the stock exhaust use to go no problems with fumes

i have a turndown right under the drivers door and no fumes.....

The problem with going straight out the back is that you have a better chance of pinching it off there. I know at Paragon I scraped the rear bumper coming off of obstacles once or twice but I never hit the area where the stock exhaust comes out. I actually cut mine off after it turns down over the rear axle when I did my ext, shackle, I get no fumes and I have never hit it there!!

For sure the stock location is better than straight out under the bumper for this reason. Take a look at any FJ60/62 driving down the road and 99.44% of the time the tailpipe is squished into an oval.

I'd go out at the stock location. In some states it's illegal to exit before the rear wheels so you might want to check to make sure.

I think it pretty tough to get the exhaust into our trucks thru the window unless you have it dump right under the cab or somethin...its more of a prob for 4Runner owners. yes there is a lot of resonance, i also have a hi flow cat and a flowmaster 40 ... i like it loud... it isnt as loud as when i had no muffler at all, but it is still loud.....

thanks guys.
it's on. followed the stock direction. it tucked up nicely. the flowmaster 50 gives a smooth throaty sound down low with no heavy resonance at highway speed. lets the headers work.
now, about that cam. . . .

if that were the case my dad's '97 F150 with stock exhaust would be illegal...

i rigged up my exhaust to dump right behind the cab with a turndown. no resonance but it's a 2 1/4 glasspack so it's loud and pops a bit when i get off it. not really the sound i like, i might try a turbo muffler or flowmaster knockoff, and use 2" tube. i'll have plenty of time since i got a defective thorley header

kyle... it isnt a state law its us dot...


a passenger vehicle such as a 4runner or an suv cannot have hte exhuast exit anywhere forward of the rear axle due to safety issues as fumes may enter the cabin... however its ok to have it exit before the wheels on a pickup truck because the exit is behind the passenger cabin....
