Vacuum leak? Clogged fuel filter? Need to clean the throttle body? These are just a couple options.

What shape are your plugs and wires in? Might want to check those out also. Does it idle rough as well or just drops in idle?
Salue

:pat:It could possibly be vacuum switching valve(vsv).I think it runs from the egr.On my 87' there are 2 of these mounted on the valve cover. The one closest to the firewall(back of motor)would be the one to check. The one at the front controls the a/c idle up.An easy way to check it is to use a multi-meter.Unplug the wire connecter from the vsv,set the meter to ohms, touch the 2 leads from the meter together and see if the needle moves as far as it can go,if it does, then the meter is set right. Now seperate the leads of the meter.now touch each lead on the vsv with the leads from the meter. If the meter needle buries then the vsv is ok.If not,the vsv is bad.Another way is to take a piece of speaker wire an use it like jumper cables. One end to the battery the other to the vsv.Don't leave it on very long,it could burn up the vsv if its still good.I'd use the meter method if at all possible. The vsv is nothing more than a bunch of thin wire wrapped around that when energized becomes magnetic and opens an air passage. You'll see the 2 vacuum lines going to it.Then again,it could be a stopped up air filter and I wasted everybodies time rambling.Oh well, good luck.

:pat: Yeah,it could be the wiring also.My motors been acting up during cold starts.I wiggled the wires around the cold start timer and the temp sensor and the idle picked up.So you could check all the wiring.I almost forgot about the air suction valve under the throttle body, beside the cold start timer. It should be closed when the engine is warm. There's 2 ways to check it.With the engine warm,1-pinch the hose going into the asv with a pair of pliers,if the motor smooths out then the valve is stuck open.if the rpm's drop about 50,then it's ok.2-with the engine warm, pull the hose off going into the asv.stick a screwdriver into the hole of the asv.If it stops after an inch or so,then the asv is ok.If the screwdriver goes in pretty deep, then the asv is hung open.I forgot to point out that only disconnect the front hose. The 2 in the back of the asv are coolant lines. If the asv doesn't appear to be working, you can take the front cover off by removing the 4 phillips screws in the front. There should be a spring and a small plastic plate that works as a gate valve.Make sure it moves freely. These things aren't cheap so be careful.Good luck.

Don't overlook the TPS. It could be out of adjustment. I just went through the same kind of thing and it was the TPS being out of adjustment. It wasn't out of spec but toward the high side of the specs.

:pat:One last thing on the asv. There's an electrical connection on the back of it.I had to get under the truck to see it.Mine was unplugged after the motor was installed during a rebuild. This connecter sends signals to the computer.Make sure it is plugged in.Good luck!
