Engine swap 2.7 to 3.0 or 3.4?
Hey guys my first post here. I saw all of your posts and figured someone could help me out. I live here in Florida, and like most of us, love muddin’. I even got the sweet ride to do it with, a 97’ Tacoma with 33” and most the goodies. My problem is I got a 2.7 in this babe. Which as most of you know is a dog, its horse power almost meets its foot-pounds of torque. Stock was 150 ponies and the torque was 180ish give or take ten or twenty. In a feeble atempt to counter this, I did almost any simple mod I could (intake, racing wires & plugs, header ect.) cept finding a turbo (if they make one for this POS), still it doesn’t have enough Grunt to get me out of those “iffy” spots. Perhaps you gentle men (and ladies if your out there) could tell me what kind of 6 cycl. will bolt up in my rig and give me that much needed power, with the least amount of weight as possible. I have a 5 spd. 4x4 in a single cab short bed. What I really want to know is will a six simply bolt up to my tran. and motor mounts? Any feed back would be nice
Thanks
Wil
Thanks

TRD makes a supercharger for the 4 cylinders. have you considered regearing after going to 33's?
there are a few on www.TTORA.com who have swapped in the 3.4
just don't swap a 3.0.

The 3.0 is a reliable motor, (Aside from the known issues) and I have owned 2 of them.
But, I wouldnt go and seek out one to install. The 3.4 litre would be the way to go.
And sure the 2.7 is underpowered with 33's and no re-gear, but it is no POS.

I would say if you want power for mudding, then swap in a 3.4 and put the supercharger on it. If you do the URD kit at the same time you should be getting about 270hp and around 300ft-lbs. This would give you all the power you need for your Tacoma.

Theres a lot of folks that disagree with you when you call the 2.7 a dog. I think its a pretty sweet no nonsense 4 banger. It also has a higher horsepower to liter ratio than a 3.4 (3.4 is a badass motor though). Find somebody who owns a 3.0 and ask them if you can help them work on that motor.. that thing is pretty dam hard to work on IMO..plus its heavier than the 2.7, and really has no more power.
I agree w/ lllateralus.. you are going the wrong direction. You need to regear bro!

Sell your truck and buy a V6. Doesnt sound like you have enough work done to your current truck to justify the added expense of a swap. Also, swapping a 2.7 for a 3.0 is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard of. More weight, same power, and less than stellar reliability? No thanks.
Have you regeared for those 33s? The 2.7 is far from a dog.

Either Sell and buy a 3.4 or swap a 3.4 in either way
TRD made a supercharger for the 2.7 but when toyota bought out TRD they killed all new superchargers. for all apps as far as i know. so you would have to check ebay to see if you can find a used one.

Checked with a parts type that's been with Toyota for awhile. He said TRD came out with the superchargers for the 2.7 years ago, but only for a short time, then they hauled 'em back. Damned shame.

Sounds like you need a regear. What gears you running now?
My 97 4runner, is a 2.7 which is alot fatter than your tacoma and its not a dog, but i have 4.56 gears in it.
PS why the hell is this thread still alive, it started over a year ago
LCE Engineering has the same thing as the TRD supercharger for the 2.7L
