Hi all,

I drive 1996 V6 4runner with 200K km on it.

A strange thing happened recently.

Driving (in wet conditions) I arrive at my destination, stop,
turn off the engine, try to start the engine after a couple
minutes, it starts, but immediately shuts off. I try again - same thing. I wait few minutes,
try again and it works OK.

It happened for the first time few weeks ago, I since had
spark plugs and ignition wires replaced (as well as timing
and 3 driving belts). It was scheduled and not related to the
incident.

The same thing happened again yesterday.

I drive everyday and recently a lot in wet weather (fall in
Toronto), so it doesn't happen every time the truck gets wet.

I wonder - what could it be?

Dude,
i got to tell you, the EXACT same thing happened AFTER I changed my spark plugs.....I forgot to securly attach one of the plug packs (in its socket) and my engine dies with a registered engine code....
Bottom line, I double checked all plug pack connections and re-secured the connection and BAM, the engine started with no issues.... and then I cleared/reset the code and I was fine.


So, I ask you.....Did this happen before or after the plug and wire change......May be a loose connection do you have a engine code?
Check engine light? As "auto zone" will check the codes for you for free...

It happened once BEFORE (few weeks) and AFTER (few days), both time when it was wet (rain and wet snow)
There's no engine light "on" on the dash.

If your engines is cutting out/ dying this should produce a trouble code...?,
and you need to "run to codes" to fiquire out the issue...
What kind of plugs are you running?
to me this sounds like it could be a few things...
1) a vacuum Leak or loose vacuum line can cause you engine to die. Your computer (ECM) will automatically do this..

2) A poor or loose spark plug wire connection...again your ECM computer will automaticaly kill the engine....If you hit a large puddle that (especially a SALTY Puddle) can corrode a connection and create a high resistance level and thus a poor connection...
You may wish to check all suspect connections for corrosion or high resistance

3) What kind of Air filter are you running? Some Peeps have had some issues with the oil from K&N filters clogging the M.A.F. As a Dirty M.A.F (mass air flow sensor) BTW: the MAF is Immediatly after the air filter, carefully spray this small wire with "MAF cleaner" ( and not carb/or brake cleaner, too harsh) and DON'T touch this small wire with your fingers just spray some cleaner on it and let dry.
