engine problems

just got home from a drive... well my truck is acting rather funny... almost feels as if the MAF is dirty... my truck will go from a stop ok @ partial throttle, but if i gun it, it will wind up like it cant go any faster and is only staying at maybe 3k rpm....

i dont have a MAF!!!

not sure if it matters but it seems one of the butterfly valves in the carb is just sxtraight up and down, it will move slightly by ahnd, but nothing mehanical moves it.... also, lately on cold startups, i have been getting down the block @ WOT and when i let off, get a shotgun sound backfire, maybe its a front fire? but now my truck basically wont go over 3k rpm and to even get it there its sluggish......
alsp seems like it winds up rather fast if that makes any sense...

Possible causes:
1 Your camshaft timing chain may have slipped.

2 Your ignition timing needs adjusting.

3 There is a serious engine problem, You may have a burnt or broken valve, Worn or broken camshaft.

4 Your spark plug wires are placed on the wrong spark plugs: Check firing order and place the wires on the correct spark plugs.

With the Backfiring, I don't belive it is the carb. But I don't know much about Carbs.
It sounds like a timing or electrical problem.
Check all the plugs and wires. easy and cheap. then go form there.

What about low backfiring, like out the exhaust the backfire-gurgle you get when the truck is still on the rich cycle (warming up)? Is that harmful to the engine?

Anyway, my carb's flaps are always partially open, and i believe one is straight up and down, and I don't really have any problems. When the truck is still warming up and I push the throttle almost halfway (you know how the pedal is really easy to push, and then about halfway it gets twice as hard to push, its still easy, but its when you're opening the secondaries for more power?) it will go slower and bog down where as if I give it 1/8-1/4 throttle, its fine. Are all the vacuum lines connected? Especially the vacuum advance on your distributor?

I would take out your spark plugs and inspect them for damage and gap. also check the wires for damage and proper connection. If you have not replaced the plugs and wires this is the time to do it.
If it is the timing you will need to take it to a shop. Unless you have the tools and know how to set it yourself.
Look into the cheapest and most simple things first and go forom there.

Another thing that can make it run like that would be a bad Catalytic Converter.

the cat is fairly new, as are the plugs/wires/fuel filter.... hmmmm

@ 1/2 throttle i can drive it, and get it up to traffic sped tested to @ least 50 mph in the street, but the second i go WOT it gets louder, the truck shifts forward and seems like its basically redlining @ what sounds to be 3k rpm (no tach or speedo)

changed the fuel filter... nothing changed.....

im wondering if its carb related... there dont seem to be any exhuast leaks... but i have noticed upon giving it more gas then half throttle, that the front of my truck seems to get insanely loud.... like the whole ricer intake thing...... eventhough only around 3k rpm, sounds like what it used to sound like when i was going way fast on the freeway around maybe 5k rpm.....

Are you sure that one of the butterflies in the carb is hung open? It seems like it would want to over rev if this was the case!! Unless it's not getting any fuel to that side!!
