Engine noise from a 2nd gen V6:
As some of you may know by now I recently picked up a '93 SR5,
V6 Auto 'runner. I only has approx 130,000 kms on it and up until mid 2001 it was reg. maintained by a Toy. dealer. I've confirmed that the Head gasket has been done, timing belt, valve clearance, etc etc... but I'm wondering about the engine noise. Short of finding another one on a lot and test driving it, are these engines quiet? noisy? or in between. This is what I experience: From a standing start the truck sounds like a really big fan, a kind of whooo sound until you moving at least 20-30 kmh. When cruising its nice and quiet until you step on it. Once over 3000 (passing gear) rpm the engine's top end (valve train) noise increases. It's not a real "tick tick tick" but somewhat like that. When I manually shift it or its in ECT, there seems to be some vibration around 4000 rpm that goes away at around 4600. Also, I noticed this at a drive-through once my window was open, it seems the "truck" makes more noise idleing when hot, after its been driven for some time. The noise (a kind of ticking) seems to be coming from the rear of the engine compartment.. not entirely unlike a leaky manifold or something. A few weeks ago I did a major tune up on it. Replace the oil (mobile-1 10w30 high-mileage) toy. filter, plugs, cap, rotor, and wires. It seems to run good (with the exception of the noise) and I'm getting approx 18mpg highway. I would just like to get any feedback if possible as I've never owned a "truck" before. Everything else I have is "happy" to rev @ 7 grand so it could just be me.If there is anyone around the K-W area in soutern Ontario that could take me for a ride in theirs.... that might help too P. |

Well the big whoo that sounds like a fan is the fan. It engages everytime you start the truck for about 30 seconds if it's warm and a couple minutes if its cold. As far as the rest I have a 5 speed and can't help ya with.

Mine ticks too, and i suspect that it's either the lifters or the valves. i noticed it most when i started using synthetic oil, the person suggested 5W-50.... and i noticed it a lot then, so i changed it out for 10W-30 synthetic, and a lot of the noise has gone away...so this leads me to believe that the "tick" is the lifters. thats just my opinion though.

Being that you're in Canada, you might want to go to 10W40 first and work your way up from there instead of jumping viscosity so far and going right to a 20W50, unless you keep it in a heated garage. Even then, I'd be leary of 20W50.
I had a '90 with the V6 manual. I used 10W40 exclusively and garage-kept the truck. Morning starts were no colder than 38-40 degrees when it was below 0 outside. Best of luck with the new "toy"!! ![]()
