Engine dies and will not start again...

Guys,

Was making a turn tonight at a stop light and my engine just cuts off. I try to start it again, but the starter just cranks and cranks; no turnover. What could this be? No check engine light, plenty of gas, etc. Idle speed seems to be normal.

I suspect something electrical because my two amps stopped coming on with the key. Everything else electrical works fine though. No fuses blown. My father disagrees. He thinks it's something fuel related.

Any ideas?

BTW- I just remembered that yesterday as I was sitting at a stop light, the RPMs dropped really really low (like sub-500), but came right back up. If this helps any...

Check your MAF (especially if you are running a K&N) and clean your throttle body.

I think that I'm going to have to agree with your father. The only reason your amps would not turn on is if your deck is not turned on or coming on. Obviously there would still be power to the amps since your battery is still powering your starter.

First, I would disconnect one of the spark plug wires and hold it close but not touching the distributer. If you can hear and/or see the spark then your electrical is good.

If that checks out I would crank on the truck for a little bit and then remove one of the spark plugs. If you are getting fuel the spark plug will be wet. If the plug is dry, I think your fuel pump probably went out.

Good Luck

something similar happened to my
cousins 87 pickup. It wouldnt start
just crank over. finally he figured out
that it was the fuel pump. after getting that
fixed the truck ran like a champ.

Thanks for all the replies.

For the record, it turned out to be the 30A starter/ignition fuse. Somehow, one of the pulleys sliced the thick starter wire causing it to short out while I was driving. I ended up re-routing the wire to where this wouldn't happen again.
