Engine Block

Hi everyone, is there anyway to tell what kind of condition an engine block is in. It doesn't have the heads on it and I was just wondering what I can check to see if I can use the block or not. Thanks.

To be absolutely sure the block is useable you should have it magnifluxed or some similar machine shop procedure to check for cracks. Additionally, the bore of the cylinders should be checked to make sure it can be bored out and rebuilt. Probably not the quick and dirty checks you were wanting to make, but that's the only way to be absolutely sure.
