Encouragement for DIY lift/locker install!
I've been lurking here for a couple of years watching others take the leap into better trucks. Thought I'd finally do it myself and lift my 98 4runner....
Got the Tundra setup w/all the trimmings from sschaefer3 (great guy to deal with and BS on phone with) and a lock-right months ago and waited until it was no longer hot as hell outside. Couple weeks ago I installed the rear w/help from a friend. Did the front and dropped in a lock-right out back myself. It really wasn't that hard at all. If you can figure out how to read simple instructions and use common hand tools, it only takes a little time...
The lift was well packaged, and easy to install. As far as performance goes, I can't believe it. It's a whole new truck....The rear articulation is nice! So far, I've had the lock-right in sand, snow, rock, and some wicked DV trails and it increases traction in a major way. I get no ratcheting noises unless I'm turning really tight and the locking/unlocking noises are minimal. I find the on-pavement manners to be fine and barely noticable as long I'm not driving it like I stole it. I drove through considerable snow in the mtns. yesterday to cut a Christmas shrub and kept it in 2wd most of the time.....The locker only gave me a thrill a couple of times....
It's not the '59 baja that I've wheeled all over out here (and winched up Suprise back in the day!) or my G-ride (see avatar), but it has better on-pavement manners, gets better milage, is quieter than..... and goes 95% of the tough spots that the other two do....
In short, if you're wondering if you should mod your Gen. 3 runner... lift....lock...is it harsher on the road? ETC? CAN I DO IT MYSELF?!
YES! You can....and you should!
