I went to use the e-brake on the 01 sr5 auto a few weeks ago and finally got around to checking it out.

The e-brake is in the released/down/off position. I can't pull up at all, and yes the button is depressed.

I replaced the rear drum shoes in the winter and i swear i have used the e-brake since then, but i'm not sure.

I trace the cable under the truck to the back. It is connected on both sides and looks fine, rusted near the drums, but fine.

I can pull on the cable around the pumpkin and it looks like it pulls the mechanism on the inside of the drum.

I have the mrs. pull on the e-brake as i work my way underneath the truck from the handle to the pumpkin so i can feel if there's movement on the cable. For as little as she can pull i can feel the cable moving a tad.


So i take apart the console and disassemble the hand brake and it operates properly with the cable disconnected; It's not the handle mechanism.

As cheap as an e-brake cable is, i might try that. Does anyone think it could be something else?

I have had my ebrake cable/linkage replaced once and ind it is acting all wonky again.
I just noticed last time I used it that it would not seem to fully release, meaning the handle would not return solidly in to the console.
I will be following this thread for answers to your issue.
I guess the name of the game for the ebrake is "use it or lose it".

I think you are correct in that with the toyota trucks.

One of the pivots near the left rear brake on my truck was seized, but after some oil and sweet talking it was moving once again. In your case though, maybe just follow the linkage from front to back and try to isolate the place its sticking, kind of like you've been doing? I'm also interested in this issue.

People these Toyotas if they have rear drum brakes you need to use the E-Brake to keep the rear brakes adjusted .

I know with Automatics most just put it in park never using the E-Brake.

** The E-Brake has a steel pin and bracket going through an Aluminum block well you don`t use it it just seizes up after a while.

I will bring the parts along Mr dalison today if you see this before work.

If you live in the salt zone, it will seize up anyway if you don't keep it lubed. I have a manual and use my E-brake all the time and my right bellcrank locked up real good. Now I slather them with anti-seize every few years. So far, so good.

Well the never seize is a given

. I just forgot to mention it because to me it is such a habit I don`t think of it I buy it by the case so a can is never far away.

When something is going back together .

thanks for the support, I got to the last bolt and the little ˟˟˟˟er stripped. of course nothing on these trucks is easy when it's underneath. I spend about 4 hours dropping the fuel tank and trying to remove the stripped bolt. It never came out so i took the old trusty sawzall and removed the bracket for the e-brake.

I will post more later.

i forgot about this. It was indeed the e-brake cable. It moves freely now and the only thing that i need to do is adjust the e-brake at the drum. Wyoming has instructed me on how to do it, but i have been lazy and on vacation.

The cable was something like $35 from rockauto.


In retrospect i wonder if i sprayed wd-40 down the cable, if it would have loosened up somehow......
