Dust in through ventilation- How to keep it out?

How do you guys keep dust from coming in through the ventilation system. When doing expedition type runs through the desert I get a lot of built up in the ducts. I keep my system on recirculate, but the second I turn recirculate off, even if I'm nowhere near any dust, I get a big poof of dust in my face and in my cab. Does anyone have any way, if there is one, to maybe block off the intake so this doesn't happen. I'm just looking for something I can do for the 2-3 days I'm out and about. Thanks.

It is both related to Nirvana and Engrish. It's a T-shirt in a store window in Japan. I think they got the concept that it's a famous quote, but I don't think they get the meaning...

Anyway...does anyone know where the external intake is? I just got my Runner yesterday and havn't gotten a Haynes or FSM yet.

Sorry. I meant it as kind of a genereal question, but in particular I mean for a '98 4Runner with the V6. Any other models/techniques would be great to know about as well though.

The external intake is between the windshield and the rear of the hood.

Thanks. I always thought that was jsut some channel to guide water around during rain or something. Unfortunatly that doesn't seem like soemthing that would be easily be blocked off. Maybe a large cover or something?
