Dunlop R/T's and new wheels - Pictures
I finally got my new tires and wheels on last night. I love them so far! Dunlop R/T 256/75 X 16 tires and US Wheel model 84 16" X 7" rims.
I ended up with these sort of uncommon tires for a couple of reasons after looking at a bunch of different brands and types.
I thought they'd be better in on pavement and hard packed snow than a typical M/T type tire, and I figured they might work off road better than a typical A/T. The Land Rover guys also swear by them so they must be good right?
The wheels appear to be identical to the Rockcrawlers everyone seems to sell but they do have the silly red stripe on them, just like an AR-767.
I can see why everyone says this tire and wheel size is the max on a stock height 3rd gen. I have some *slight* rubbing on the backs of the inner fenders at full lock, and also some on the inside edge of the front flare as the edge of the tire passes it when turning the wheels. I'll have to wait until this weekend to try to stuff them and see where else I get problems.
Total $$ came to -
Tires from Tirerack = $452 + $60 shipping.
Wheels from Summit = $208 + $24 for lugs + $9 shipping.
Local mounting and balancing = $48.
Total = $792. More than I wanted to spend but hey, it's only money right...

Nice, I like the black wheels. Do you have loud highway hum? I was toying with the idea of getting some 265/70x17 Dunlop M/T's, but couldn't justify the buckboard ride those monsters probably provide on the highway.

These things are pretty stiff compared to the stock Goodyear rim protectors I had but their're not horrible. I dropped the air 3 lbs to 32psi and it helped some and got the tread pretty much flat in the process.
The 3rd gens have some pretty good noise/vibration/harshness isolation if you ask me. My truck is really quiet. Your 4th gen should be better still but I think you are right. I think you'd notice an aggressive M/T style tire.

If I was going to start dropping $$ on more suspension, new skids, bigger wheels/tires, engine work, etc. I'd rather get an old 4Runner, Toyota pickup, or a Sami and have a trail only rig. Something where body damage is a non issue.
Then again, if I had that kind of cash to spend on just a toy I'd have an A/Sedan Mustang in the garage...

Black rims
Good choice! I have gotten to where I much prefer the black rims to the polishy ones any day on any rig. I think it just looks meaner! A Sharpie will take care of that red stripe!

is it just me or am i the only person who likes the fat lip bumper?? im tossin one on to reaplace my busted ass flat face ones and will be painting the valence either black or the color of my rig. i think they look better with a grill guard and or a hoodscoop
