Downshifting sounds

Ok, so here is the story.....

I was screwing around in a dirt field and I saw a low-lying rock, worthy of rolling over.... my mistake was that this rock was a little bit too high in the middle and not enough on the sides, so I got my truck stuck.... on top of being in really really soft topsoil, I was essentially screwed. But, I was not far from civilization (I was in the middle of a bunch of houses), and I had All-Star Towing pull me off. Nothing to the eye was damaged, all of my plates protected me well, but something happened I think to my transmission, and I dont know how.

When I downshift, it now makes a sort of short grinding sound, no matter what RPM range above 1300rpm.... since then (2 nights ago, on the 23rd), I havent been able to downshift into 2nd and 3rd without grinding. Also, my reverse gear sounds like something is snagging... or something. The car is still driveable, but I really want to fix this problem... No more rock climbing, no matter how small, w/o my brother!

Any help, fellow yotatechers?

OK we need more information

- What year
- Truck or 4runner
- maual or auto?
- how old is the fluid?

I am assuming it is a 4runner that is manual. If you got high centered you would have experianced some body flex. This could lead to fexing of the case and hence leaking on one of the seals. Check and see if you are loosing fluid. Low fluid can lead to this problem, So can old fluid as the syncros end up slipping due to dirt & too tick of fluid.

I am in a 1989 toyota pickup v6 4x4.

We found out that an armor plate was rattling against the drive shaft, so we bent it back into place.

There is some oil spray above that area, and I checked the transfer case so i know it is not from there.... where it is coming from. Any ideas?

The oil spray you are seeing could be the grease from the joints. Look at the location. Is it in a straight line above the nipples? Post a pick if needed.
