door handle parts help

My driver's door won't open from the outside. I took the door panel off and can see that the plastic piece that connects the rod to the handle is broken. I went to the dealer figuring it would be a 79 cent plastic part but the parts guy said I have to buy a whole new handle for $104. Is he full of crap or does Toyota really not sell just the little plastic part?

He's full of crap. I have the same problem, sorta - my passenger door won't open from the inside. and I need to find the part number for the little green thing that broke.

4runners.org has a nice write-up on this but doesn't list the part number either.

I'm talking about the outside handle though. I know people have replaced the plastic part on the inside handle, but couldn't find anything about replacing it on the outside handle. I'm guessing here that they are different parts.

Here is a link to an online FSM for the 96: http://haroldmiller.net/FSM/ It is something like an 80Meg download but you mind be able to find the exploded diagram.. parts numbers might be there though not sure.
I have had awesome luck putting up a Parts Wanted ad on both Yotatech and TTORA. Members on both sites have come through for me with parts and good deals on the shipping.
Post up a wanted thread, you might be able to get the parts a helluva lot cheaper than the dealer...

sorry, forgot to mention this is for a '96 4Runner.

I took a look at the tacoma FSM but it doesn't give part numbers.

Thanks for the link Randy. It looks like the parts guy at the dealer was right. The plastic piece is part of the door handle assembly.

The good news is that today I tried messing around with it instead of just looking at it and the rod just popped back into the handle. I don't know why I didn't try that before. I guess I saw that part of the plastic piece was broken and had to be replaced. Now I'm left wondering why the plastic piece is shaped the way it is. It's like the part that broke off isn't necessary at all.

After you pop the rod back into the handle, you're supposed to rotate the plastic piece so that it clips onto the rod. All the plastic piece does is prevent the rod from coming off of the handle, so it will work fine without it... until the rod falls out of the handle again.

OK. I had time to check my parts catalog when I got home from work. Ask the parts guy at Toyota to look up part number 69293-12030 or 69293-12040 (I think both will work... they are just different colors). His item number on the exploded diagram on the computer should be 69293B. I'm pretty sure that is for the plastic outer door handle snap, which should retail at $1 to $2. Let me know how you make out.

EDIT: Actually, I just noticed you were looking for the front door clip. The numbers I posted are for the rear door. I'm leaving for a ball game, but I'll try to look into it again later.

Well, for some reason, my parts catalog pulls up a drawing of a shock and spring when I click on front door handle and lock for the 3rd gen 4R, so that's a glitch in the program. I did check the front and rear door outer handle clips for a second gen 4R, and they are the same part numbers as the rear door outer handle clips for your '96, so it would appear that they are all the same (hopefully that holds true for 3rd gen front doors). However, from the two part numbers I posted above, it looks like 69293-12030 is for the passenger side, and 69293-12040 is for the driver's side. For the couple of dollars it'll cost, it's worth ordering in 69293-12040 to try out.

Nick-M: For you, if it's the little plastic piece that locks the rod to the inside handle, your part numbers are 69759-20060 (passenger side) and 69759-20070 (driver side), I think.

GSGALLANT,

thanks for looking up the part numbers. The door handle rod came off again a couple days ago, and now I can't open the door even from the inside. The lock is stuck on something and it only comes up half way. Crap.

Jiggle the lock pushbutton (repeatedly pull up & push down on it) while you're trying to open door with the handle. Mine was jammed shut and it eventually worked for me.

well shoot, if anyone ever says you can't get the door panel off without opening the door they are full of it

I managed to get the door panel off enough to stick my skin and bone arm down into the door and free the rod that had caught on part of the door, keeping the door from unlocking. I'm gonna take those part numbers to the dealer and see what they can come up with. It might be a week or two before I have time to though.
