this might sound dumb,but would anyone know how i could disconnect this door bell when the keys are in the ignition and me and my wife and kids are trying to jam out to radio with the doors open.without messing anything up i would appreciate it . or if it is possible at all . and if there are any links showing how it is done.thanks much appreciated,ken

not sure, but on my 88 theres a little box on the right side of the steering column. thats the beeper box. i disconnected it cuz it reminded me too much of my alarm clock. maybe thats where urs is too?

If I can think to do it, I'll check my wiring diagrams and see if there is a way to disable the circuit coming from the doors to silence the chime without losing the other chime features. Having it for other things is a good thing to have like your headlights being on.

Why dont you just turn the key to "key on position?" instead of drilling or cutting any wires? That just sounds like a logical thing to me instead of disabling a key safety feature of your Toyota. When the key is turned to the "key on position" it will chime 5 times or so and then quit. Thats what I do for drive-ins and camping and stuff.

I, too, was wondering how to go about this. Eventually tracked down a wiring harness that you can disconnect while you want the door open without the chime. On my '96, I take off the access door (for the fuses) down to the left of the steering wheel, and it's the big white ~22 pin connector that you disconnect. that'll disable the chime temporarily. i've driven with it unplugged, but found out it controls the sunroof too (couldn't open it). probably other things too. but when i'm working on the truck and want doors open to work to the beat, i just disconnect that beauty. works like a charm!

that would be the bomb! i love having music when i work on the car but i hate the buzzer. and i'm a bit forgetful so i would still like to have the reminder for the headlights. i disconnected the box in both of my old celicas, the one that ozzie was talking about, and killed my battery twice in the following months! so, i still need my car to tell me that i'm stupid sometimes

Anyone get anywhere with the wiring schematic on this one? Can't find a writeup for one.

really simple way to solve this whole issue is to just take off the plastic on the drivers side left foot area, (you have to pull up the plastic running board guide a little) to do this. theres 1 screw holding the top of the plastic piece up. take that sucker off and pull out the foam insulation stuffed in there. you'll see a single (red for mine) wire going to the little sensor switch that your door trips when its opened or closed. theres a plastic connector conveniently right on the wire. Disconnect it, and holy crap your done. goods and bads of this are debatable. no dinging, yay. no door open door light, ehh. no headlight ringer if you leave them on, ehh. ability to rock out at your campsite with no annoying sounds, yayyy. your choice, just know what the consequences are. and if you don't like it, easy to just reconnect and get on with it

Ahh too bad was hoping to just disable to the keys in the ignition alarm with with door open. I had an Volkswagen I was able to just open a relay and snip out a resistor and was hoping there was similar "fix" for the 4Runner to just disable the one feature. Looks like I need a better garage radio for now.

could just remove the 10mm bolt for the door switch that will shut it up just put it back in when u want the chime back

Can't imagine why the chimes don't go off when you turn it to the ignition on position (second key click). Are you waiting for the chimes to stop? The accessories position (1st click) will cause the chimes to repeat indefinitely, but the ignition on position (second click) will chime at a slower tempo and stop after about five chimes.
Just make sure your headlights, dome lights, fan motor and all other electrical components are off so you don't run the battery down.
I just spent a whole weekend doing that.

Hey guys, followed the link that shows removing the cluster and drilling out the obnoxious noise maker. Worked great!!

One problem.....now my tachometer only reads between 2800 and 3500 rpms at all times. Drops to 0 when the key is off like it's supposed to. Any ideas what I might have screwed up?
