Does zip-tie installation of Hayden tranny coolers really case damage?
Hello there,
Tons of stuff on this board about the hayden 1678 cooler, but i was wondering is it really true the ziptie would eventually rub so much as to cause damage? There was one person who brought it up in a thread, but im not certain theres any truth to it. I just figure the zip tie would wear out before the metal tubes on the radiator does (the fins might break, but who cares about the fins).

I just had a thought, the guy at the Pepboys did bring up an install kit which is just the mounting hardware normally included with the cooler. So maybe you could just use 4 extra zip ties and pads in order to distribute the load more evenly. Just a thought.
Has anyone actually made their own brackets to mount like the TRD brackets? I seen the underbody mounts, but they seem dangerous to me.

I think the zip ties have foam pad on them to prevent the rubbing...mine did anyway.
The part going through the radiator is in tension so I doubt it will have much chance to rub.

Also try to snug the ties straps as tight as possible to compress the foam padding, the padding will take a set and loose compression later.
I have had Haydens on some customers vehicles now for close to 6 yrs with no problems.

I used stanless standoffs to mount mine. One end is 1/4-20 female and the other is 1/4-20 male stud. I used button heads and nylok nuts. They fit in the existing holes on the crossmember and only required a 1/4" hole to be drilled into the flange on the cooler. Nice and secure and independent of a/c condenser. You can find all the hardware at mcmaster carr.

Maybe someone has a size similar. I don't have the instructions for the TRD tranny cooler so I can't cross reference the sizes needed.

I don't have a hayden but a similar model. It came with mounting brackets that are nothing more than pieces of flat steel with a few holes drilled in each end. You can buy the same type of thing at home depot in numerous sizes. I put one of each bracket on the radiator mount, and the other on the cooler. Its hard mounted at all four corners and doesn't move at all. I have a body lift so I had longer bolts to use from my radiator drop brackets but with longer radiator mounts bolts you should be fine.

You could always buy an Earls Performance cooler, while they are more expensive they are thicker and more efficient than Haydens or similar stacked plate coolers.
Earls has a mounting kit for most of them and they come in a variety of different size pipe or AN fittings.
I have a 13 row Earls on my 2nd gen, no pics handy right now but some old timers may remember it.
This is a 24 or 25 row Earls on my car but shows the mounting kit for it. Each of the upper and lower aluminum brackets have foam padding next to the cooler.
