when ever i am refueling my rig when it fills up and the pump clicks of i am still able to top of an additional 3 -3.5 gallons essentially giving me 300 -320 miles per tank

This may sound dumb to you but this is how I think of it...depending on how deep you put the nozzle in the tank there is still quite a bit space left. When the nozzle is in there as far as it can go there is about 6-8 inches of space left for fuel, if you think about it and do the math, thats a lotta gas left to put it in.

So what I usually do is hold the nozzle barely in there at the very end of pumping up so I can just let it pop once...if that makes ANY sense then I'll be happy

LOL, I'm with you there! With those "extra" clicks I can easily put 20 gallons in my tank, even although Toyota manual says 4Runners come with 18 gallons tanks. Go figure...

Not sure about the 4Runner, but some manufacturers have a "little breathing" room in the tank. This is susposudly to avoid the bursting of the tank in an accident. ANybody familiar with this on the 4Runner?

I have a 4th Gen and normally put in about 20 gal when the light starts coming on. The most I have put in was 22 gal. I have not tried to add an extra few.

ya im all about not having to get gas all the time
but that extra 3.5 gallons dont come easy it take a couple extra mins and about 10 clicks to fit all that in but getting gas sucks so i top it way off

Just a thought, however, did you ever have the TSB done? The sending unit on the tank was bad on a lot of 4RUnners....I had the same thing you are describing.

How may gallons are you able to put in until it clicks?

usually about 20 miles after the light comes on i fill up an i can put in 15-15.5 gallons before it clicks -------------what is the tbs?

i ran of gas one time because the light never came on and i had 1/8th tank left indicated
any info you will be much appriciated------------

it's also because when you're pumping so much volume of gas in there so fast, it kind of gurgles and sloshed up, hutting off the automatic stop on the pump. If you filled up more slowly you can fit more in without it splashing up and shutting off the pump.

I do this all the time: add more after the pump clicks.

I completely top off my tank until I can't get anymore to go down.

i coulda swore this is not good to do this. something about the excess gas vapors (or gas) collecting in the evap box. i believe WATRD might be the source of this knowledge.

yes that is not a good thing to do, you can ruin your sending unit, or if you have a submurged pump . and the manafacture recomends not topping off tanks to the filler neck, when the fuel pump shuts off your full.

yeah, Rob mentioned it because it was a problem with the Tacoma. Apparently the valve is positioned somewhat lower than preferred and is more susceptible. At least that's what I remember.

I'll do a few clicks after the initial "full" click but I still only mamge about 15.5 gals but I've also read about overfilling damage so I'll sacrifice some miles before my next fillup.

I have been topping off after the click.. I usually fill up about 20 miles after the "gas light" comes on. Usually on the next gas fill I end up with about 12 gallons.. I know for a fact 1/3 of my tank cant still be in there. so I add about 2.5 gals more.. Whats the TBS or TSB thing somebody mentioned earier? and how can I get mine fixed or check to see if its been done already? Im pretty sure the previous owner.. (the perverbial little old lady) didnt get it done..

So how much is too much? I usually round mine up to the nearest quarter or half dollar (I'm anal about that), which sometimes takes a few extra clicks to get to. I hope I'm not doing any harm.

If the 3rd gen Runner tank is 18 gallons you should be able to squeeze in about 16 with a normal fillup since there is generally about 2 gallons that will still be in the tank if you run your truck till it stops. I think it has to do with the in tank fuel pump having to be submerged to help keep it cool.
My Eclipses tank was rated at 16 gallons and it was hard to squeeze over 14 gallons in it.
