I recently had my CB installed and have been listening to conversations while driving around. Do you guys strike up conversations during your commutes? I feel alittle awkward doing so. I still have the image of "Smokey and the Bandit" on my mind, you know "Good Buddy" and all that stuff.

I still haven't gotten mine yet. It will be for wheeling mostly, but with all the driving I'm doing, I might need to listen for a few smokey reports.

I use my CB on the highway and on the trail. Since I use radio circuits in my work, I don't use "good buddy" and the like. I am used to using a certain disciplined manner on official military circuits, and I talk on the CB in the same manner for the most part. I think that the CB is a good way to figure out what is going on around me on the road even though I always have the scanner on as well.

I don't get alot of highway chatter here in the Bay Area. And actually, I'm not on the freeways all that much anyway. So for now, mine's strictly for the trails.

WOW...I didn't think anyone used CBs any more except for maybe the truckers. I had several back in the 70s when CBs were the craze.

I use mine mainly for trail use, and when we leave the Safeway parking lot where we all meet up for a run.

I hardly ever use it other than that, unless traffic gets fubared, then I'll see what's up.

I use to turn it on at 4 am while sitting in the Boeing parking lot before going into work.
I'd see how far I could talk when it was all quiet at that time of the morning.

I use mine for on the trail and for when I'm on the highway. They have I-25 here in Colorado all messed up, so it makes it easer to find out what's going on and what line of trafic to be in. Plus, it great to listen in on trucker talk.

i used to do a lot of traveling on major highways and loved having my cb , traffic problems , speed traps , and it even helped me when i was extremely low on fuel at 4 am , and the gas station i stopped at was closed , asked a trucker how farthe nearest fuel stop was that was open , and he told me the next exit only 3 miles up , so i made it and was happy i didnt have to stay over night to get fuel.

traffic problems they are extemly handy too . even if you only listen to see where the problems are , in oregon along I-5 near salem , the jerks with home base stations run a club up there and have some high power units and are pretty much a bunch of jerks on the radio , but listen carefully to the truckers mostly and youll get the best info .

speed traps are a pleasure now , knowing they are coming up is great. of course al lyou slugs with 3.0 shouldnt have to worry about that . LOL

I'm looking at getting one soon. I know that I need to get a tunable antenna. What else do I need to look for? I want something good, but I don't want to break the bank. I'm spending most of my money on suspension mods.

You can easily find a good CB under $100. I have the Cobra 75 WX ST, an all-in-the-handset model. Someone just ran an outstanding group buy on one. Try a search on CB's, there's alot of info here on them.

I've been a little put off by how everyone talks like Boomhower (sp?) from King of the Hill...(as someone else put it on one of our runs).

Kinda funny really. "You not talkin' bout no CB no talkin' bout gurlfriend now come on back now ya hear..."

most antenneas are tunable wether it be filing the metel ones done or trimming the wire on the fiber glass ones.
i spent less then $50 on my uniden, and my antenena set up cost around $50 also , find a friend with a swr meter and tune the cb antennea combo . if you can find one get an amp ( lightly illegal) and use it for long distance talking . i had a switchable 100/200/300 one and it would reach over 60 miles (untuned) . not sure where to find one , but they are out there. if you spend a bit more on your cb you can take it to a cb shop ( located at most larger truck stops) and have them crank up the amperage.

i personally carry two motorola talk abouts with me also , when i go hunting or on trips (where the other guy doesnt have acb) they come in handy ( and the cost of talk abouts has come way down)

cb , talkabouts and my hand held gps , along with matches and a heavy coat , and i feel safe in almost any situation.
