Do intakes really do anything for the car

I've heard many different things and views about intakes. I want everyones say about them. Some day they save gas... Are they good for the engine? I know companies dont install them because the avg. driver does not want to hear noise... but theres got to be more than that!

I'n my opinon the easier a moter can breath the better, but as for more power you need more fuel to mix w/ that air. I got headers, and bigger valves, so I needed a little extra air to flow. Just my .02

yes!!! most definitely.

you see, any engine in any vehicle is derived from a racing application of that same said engine & if you've ever been to a race, or merely listened to one on tv, you would know that they are definitely NOT running any kind of an exhaust, let alone a computerized, sealed & modulated air intake system liken to what we consumers find on our vehicles - it's all wide open.

this is done for primarily two reasons:

1. emissions

2. to slow your a** down enough so that they can catch you(see also #1)

Noise is another issue for larger air intakes arent stock....my old car, WRX air intake was called and intake silencer, after removing it, the engine had much better air flow but you could hear the turbo ALOT more....while I liked the sound, I could see maybe older people finding it offensive...

So you believe its worth getting one... How much do they go for? are they easy to install? putting an intake wont get my engine dirty will it? (meaning... allow more dirt to enter)

with your truck you should actually just do the deckplate and ISR mods. people have purchased intake kits $150+ and found it to hamper the performance, where as nearly all 3rd gens are running these 2 mods (about $35 combined)

i think the only issue with doing the ISR and deckplate mod was that some runners experienced pinging, but that was easily remedied with higher octane gas. might of only been with those that had superchargers though..

You may want to do a search on that.
Two very knowledgeable guys went head to head on the topic and I don't think there was any clear determination.

Nothing bad that anyone can see so far but who knows long term?
Something about moisture...



EDIT:
before anyone tries to start comparing dyno results and stuff - I don't know anything about the technicalities of the mod. I do know that I have gained some power with this mod... but I did have it out for the past year because of my concerns about the argument to the contrary.

I put it back on to show a friend and left it in.

It will increase power.
It will increase fuel economy if you drive normally.
It will decrease fuel economy if you drive more aggressively.
I drive like an asshole, flooring it just to hear the intake roar, so I get ĊĊĊĊty mileage.
My dad drive very smoothly, getting good mileage.
The sound is a matter of opinion. I love the sound.

Think of your engine as an air pump. The easier it can pump air (intake and exhaust), the more efficient it will run.

As long as everything is sealed and hooked up correctly, the ISR mod will not be a problem. It will be VERY loud at WOT though, so keep that in mind. At first I had some pinging but it was gone within 100 miles. I don't know why that happened to be honest. And I do not use premium fuel for the ISR mod.

Do the deckplate mod + Amsoil filter for 5HP, then do the ISR mod for increased throttle response. If that combo is too loud for you, plug the deckplate and remove the elbow.

my old 96 had the isr and deckplate and my new runner thats s/c has an intake. it started as a cheap ebay kit (80 bones) or so and then got a greddy filter (60 bucks, one of the best filters in the world) and the tube was bored out and fitted with all sorts of weitd ĊĊĊĊ that my ricer buddy (500 hp a6 currently, 400 hp jetta, some crazy rx7 and hes building up a 80's corolla for drifting comps currently with a mr2 engine in it) and it gets worse gas mileage, sound awesome (like a spaceship with the s/c and the crappy sounding trd exhaust), makes a large difference over the deckplate,isr, and amsoil in power standings (did this first to old airbox but switched to the intake)

i also drive like an ass clown flooring it everywhere and burning out so my mileage blows

If you allready have a K&N FIPK, do you still need to do the ISR and deckplate mods?

no, those mods can't be done.. alot of members have found that the FIPK actually decreases performance, where as the ISR and the deckplate do have a slight improvement.
