Ok, I have determined that they will fit as in physically bolt up. IU am not sure how the offset compares.
Does any body have pics of MK4 wheels on a MK3?

I do not know if this will help but I bought take-off 16" steel rims off of a 2003 4Runner for my 2002. I never measured the offset, but in eye balling it, it looks the same.

I am pretty sure they will fit. Not positive about this but I think the backspacing is a little different but will still fit just fine.

I am going the opposite way: putting 3rd gen wheels on a 4th gen. I started a thread that lists the offset differences (http://www.yotatech.com/showthread.php?t=58433). In a nutshell, the 4th gen has 30mm offset and the 3rd gen has 15mm offset. So for you, the 4th gen wheels would sit more inward than your 3rd gen wheels. A few 3rd gen guys have here have done what you are doing. If you're interrested in buying a set of 5 wheels with 14k miles on Michilin XTerrain tires, I have a set for sale... PM me!

Found another thread with some pics of this very thing. 4x4rnr was right about the offset, the 4th gen will sit in compared to my 3rd gen wheels.

Here are a few pics of the new wheels and tires. At first I thought it looked kind of funny, I am getting used to it now after it has been a few days.
