I was going to go by walmart and get a spare key cut for my 4runner but looking around on ebay for blanks i saw the majority of them say transponder keys for 2000 year model? I have the limited model so my questions is it just a regular key or does it have to have a transponder key programmed to start ?

I can tell you that the wife's 2000 4Runner Highlander Edition 4x4 does NOT have a transponder in the key.

You have a Limited... Might want to give your local dealer your VIN and ask.

Yes, it does indeed have a transponder. I did the same thing with my 2000 limited.

You can tell for sure if you OEM key is big and fat at the base.

Luckly it is pretty easy to program new keys. I got some off ebay, I took it to Toyota and gave them my VIN number to have them cut a new perfect key for my truck. then did some searching to find the button sequence to program a new key on google.

You then simply use your OEM master key and push some buttons in order and it will program the new key. Worked fine for me.

Thanks guys, I was afraid it was, I ran into the same problem with a lincoln navigator i had and the cheapest dealer i could get to program it was like $60 plus the cost of the key. Hopefully the toyota dealers wont charge that much.

Screw the dealer, they are outrages. Just do it yourself like me.

I think I paid $5 per key on ebay, then had the dealer cut them (got a buddy that did it for free but doubt it would cost that much, can always just have someone copy your old key) and programmed it myself.

Programming it is easy, just got to press a bunch of buttons in a particular order. Not hard, just got to follow the directions.

Awesome, i searched and found you only have to have one original key to do the programming which i have. My old Navigator you had to have 2 original factory keys to program another key otherwise you had to have a dealer do it for you. So thats what i figured i would have to do with my 4runner, so glad i dont have to fool with that thanks TA and to the rest of you guys for your help!

Yep, it is really easy. I was shocked when I looked up the price of a key from the dealer as well. Ebay keys been working for 5 years so far.
