Diff question
Does anyone know if you can replace a lockng rear diff from a 98 4runner with an open diff.
Are the bolt patterns and mounting flange the same or close enough that it can be bolted on without mods.
Reason for the question is I have the option of pulling the third member from ny brother in laws 98 4runner and putting it in my 94. He doesn't need the locker.
I would have to put something back in his truck though and I'm wondering what my options would be if any.

You will have to modify the housing on yours and I don't think it can be done vice versa for his. Granted they're both V6's with the same gears, and you could make the housings work. yes you could swap them.
Here's a good link: http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/electric_locker/

I am not sure if it would physically work, but are you sure the gears are the same. What's the gearing in your front? 4.56? The 3rd gens e-locker diffs usually came with 4.3's and you definately don't want to mismatch gears.

I realize that I would have to modify my housing to fit the elocker. No problem with that. I was wondering if I would have to modify his housing in order to fit my 94 third or an open 3rd gen third.
Don't really want to do that. I'm was hoping someone would know if they would bolt right up to his.
Yes I have 4.56's and he has 4.30's but apparently the R+ P's are interchaneable so I'll swap them around when i get the thirds out.
