Died at stop sign.......?

Hopefully i'll give enough info that one of you can throw out some things to try...1998 2.4 5spd with 228,000. Has been running great, pulled up to a stop, started running rough, almost like i had forgot to push clutch in , in 4th gear...stalled, when tried to restart, would run for a couple secs...2-3, then died...each time i turn the key, it sounds like it is trying to start, but won,t...WILL start and run on starting fluid (use VERY little) and idle smooth....stop ether and it stops...you can hear the pump run for 3-4 sec, then stop when i try to start it...loosened banjo fitting on back of fuel rail, fuel sprays out while pump runs....all fuses are good, switched relays, no help.....batt good, fuel in tank....so ????? Thanks for any help, and sorry for long post....rsbhunter

Check the CEL codes. Sounds like the AFM is not plugged in, connection is interrupted, not opening or just bad.

The AFM tells the fuel pump to turn on once the engine fires.

check codes`

Checked for codes with 2 different scan tools, no codes...seems like the inj aren't getting a fire signal...does the crank position sensor, or the cam position sensor tell the ecm or inj's when to fire? Thanks...rsbhunter

Crank position sensor

i got a crank postion sensor, where is it located at ?, one place said by oil filter ? I have run it on starting fluid like i said, that is why i'm thinking injector signal.....and i still can't pull any codes from it, shows "no codes".....If it was a spark problem , or MAF sensor, wouldn't it NOT run? Any help will be great!!!!!! Also, where is my pickup coil, i have 2 coil packs? rsbhunter

I had a spark plug electrode actually move back and fourth and it did the same symptoms cost 5 bucks to fix it ... first thing I thought was injectors I tried swapping injector spots. everything then I went to the plugs and as I was re gaping them the one plug electrode moved back and fourth.

spark plug

I will check them, but i just installed new ones about 1,000 miles ago, and wouldn't that throw a code? What gets me is it runs so well if i feed it through the air filter intake hose, no miss, nothing...just like before this problem.....rsbhunter

I think the starter fluid being compressed allows it to atommize more before it enters the cylinder.. and its more explosive? My plugs were also new they were those Bosch platinum... Just think you only have changed the plugs?? it would throw a code.. at least miss fire in cylinder #___ I would think any-ways. if its not spark then you're air fuel in all messed up.... so check mass air flow or o2 or a vacuum leak?? or it could be so simple that a clogged fuel filter lol you are feeding fuel after the fillter lol so crack it open and blow threw it. beats me lol

MAF sensor

Will check the mass air flow wire, it ran great! That is why it has me stumped. Once it stalled, it tried to start, but never would catch, almost like it gets a tiny shot of fuel, but then it just cranks.....fuel sprays with decent pressure when i loosened the banjo fitting......maybe i need to try replacing the fuel filter.....but it looks to be a real pain....? Anyway, i really appreciate all the suggestions, please keep em coming, and i'll keep checking...does anyone think it could be the crank position sensor? Does it control the inj signal being sent from the ecm, ecu?
