Did something really stupid

I was changing my oil today, and somehow I managed to dent the oil filter, after it was already on the truck. :pat:

I know I should replace it, but I have oil in the engine already, am I going to need to buy new oil and do the whole thing over again??

All these views and not one person knows if the 3.0 will leak oil all over the place if I just take off the filter? I notice it points up, and I realize I'd lose all the oil in the filter, but will I lose any more?

Hey buddy, yeah things are going alright, mostly just working and going to school. The g/f is good, all except for her dented filter now. How are you doing over there?

If you just remove the oil filter and put a new one on, you're not likely to lose more than a quart at the absolute most. So, just replace the filter, add a bit of oil and check the level. You could even capture the oil that drains out and measure the volume to get a rough idea of how much you lost.

You shouldn't have to put any more than a quart with a filter change. I do filter changes every 5000 miles and do extended drains with synthetic. I put about 1/2 qt in to replace what I lose with the filter.

Ok thanks, I just wanted verification a ton of oil wouldn't drain all over me.

Alright, I guess I'll goto Checker now, and then get out the flood lamps and change my dented filter..:pat:

Here's one to make you cry. Changed the oil in my 95 Tacoma new filter too. Of course I use Mobil 1 (it's makes the story hurt even more). When removing the old filter I didn't note that the old gasket was still on the engine. I installed the new filter put 6 quarts of Mobil 1 in and cleaned up. Started the engine to work in the new oil and then my heart stopped. The oil light came on the buzzer went on and before I knew it there was about 3-4 quarts of Mobil 1 on the driveway and throughout my front end. Makes the dent in the filter seem not so bad. I don't have any advice for you but I hope this story makes you feel better.

lol, I don't think I'd have found it too humorous. But hey, at least it happened in the driveway I guess...

I made the mistake of knocking back a few beers while changing the oil... After I finished I went to back the truck into the drive way and ran over the pan of oil with the front tire! 5 quarts of dirty oil all over the driveway.. luckily the neighbors werent outside to laugh at me. I think that one takes the cake for dumba$$.

The oil goes threw the filter when the motor is running so you wouldnt have to worry about all your oil draining out unless you start the truck with the filter off
