Did the 3.4L motor change at all?
Hey Guys,
Can I buy just about any 3.4L replacement motor for my 1997 4Runner?
I've been thinking about the fact that the time to replace my 3.4 will eventually be coming now that I've got about 200k miles on it. I bet it could go a lot longer but it just doesn't seem the same after the Lakeside Toyota in New Orleans failed to tighten my crankshaft bolt correctly during a timing belt change and it came loose during a trip home from school. That was fun, it first came off in southern Alabama. I didn't know how bad that was at the time so I just kept putting the belts on and tightening the bolt up as much as I could every 60 miles. That is a trip I will never forget.

Take a look at all the info on offroadsolutions.com They have swaps for the older trucks, and there is an info page on the 3.4 and changes that were made throughout the years.

Thanks. It sounds like I should be looking for one from a 4Runner, Tacoma or Tundra and preferably 4WD since that is what I have now....

It's not so much changes in the motor as it is changes in the wiring, ECU, and sensors. Does your 5VZ have a EGR, the newer ones don't and the exhaust manifolds changed in 2001 from cast iron to a tubular stainless steel. The exhaust flanges also changed at that time. The MAF changed sometime too.

if your vehicle doesnt have the the AFR sensors then get a pre-00 engine as the engine HARNESS itself is where the sensor plugs are located. Unless you just swap over the harness from your engine then there is no problem

Hehe, that's tempting. Too bad I am not looking for a new motor right this second. I am going to see if tightening the crankshaft bolt some more will cut down on the pulley wobbling. If not, I'll just deal with it until I get some bank saved up....
