Deckplate Open or Closed, General Guidelines???
How careful do I need to be in keeping the deckplate open or closed. I am wondering if I need to screw it in during rainy weather or what? Any general guidelines for in or out??

I never screwed the lid up during the rain. However, I didn't notice any gain besides more noise, so after 1 yr I just kept the lid screwed on.

I installed the deckplate almost 2 years ago and haven't put the cap on yet. I drive about 25,000 miles/year and never noticed water in the airbox or on the outside front, for that matter. I made it a point to check it a few times under heavy rain/highway speeds and haven't worried about it since. Of course, I'd put it in for offroading.
You should have noticed a gain in performance. I'm surprised Hong didn't.

deck plate was easy to add and im very satisfied with it!!! next to come soon is the silencer removal...and so on!!!cap hasn't gone on since mod about 6months and i live in Florida...mostly rain!!!!

Finally did mine this weekend. Defenatly, a lot louder at WOT. As for HP, I can feel a difference. The engine spools up a lot quicker. Gonna wait a few tanks to tell for sure. I heard it takes a while for the computer to adjust. Oh yeah, already removed the silencer and jpipe, also have TRD drop in filter.
Also, am i going to have to clean my filter more often? Does this mod reduce the engine life?

I noticed a reall difference in cool weather at highway speeds after this mod. My 22r was pulling up big hills at 70! It definetly can't do that in hot weather.

It is simple really.
If you are going to cross a stream or creek where the water is getting close to the top of the bumper or your not sure how deep it is, screw the lid on.
You can leave it open all the rest of the time.
See, simple. Right?

Yeah, I've seen a lot of posts saying people can tell a difference, but I can't. I also have mpg data on Excel from the day I bought the taco and in comparing with and without deck plate, there's no noticable difference. I'm considering opening the deck plate again at New Years and do another 1 yr data collection.

Well, I have doubts about claims of increase MPG. I have even more doubts of claims of less MPG.
The idea here is to increase performance. The elbow and stock snorkle creates a restriction in the intake system. If you can reduce or eliminate the restriction, then the engine has access to more air that it can injest. When it takes in more air, it can make more power, which results in more FUN.
Now I highly doubt that at reduced throttle settings, like in cruise that this elbow is creating a restriction to the point the engine is not getting access to all the air it needs to produce the power needed for cruising which is where you spend most of your time and pretty much that is what impacts fuel economy.
Now as you advance the throttle more and more and the RPMs increase at some point that elbow is going to restrict air flow and the engine is not getting access to all the air it is capable of injesting and that is the point where if you eliminate the restriction, you will get more power then you could of before.
If you are not running around at high throttle settings and RPMs a lot I kind of doubt how you would see any difference with the elbow in or out.
Remember all the dyno test that are done to confirm or disprove if this mod has any benifit is done at full throttle. In that condition is consistantly shows a power increase of 6 HP or better.
You can run your MPG charts all you want, but I fail to see how it could make any difference at anything less then high power settings.
The deck plate mod is the same a removing the elbow, but allows you to easily close it back up for water crossings. I have never understood why someone that never off roads would go through the trouble to cutting up a perfectly good airbox and installing a deck plate, when they get the exact same benifit from simply removing the elbow.

Yep, I do the same thing as Travis. In fact, I just put the snorkel back on. I figure there is no reason to have the deckplate open and the elbow removed. Theoretically the elbow removed reduced my stream crossing capability, since I do so much of that here in Phoenix and all
