Just put the deckplate mod in a few weeks ago now after all this time im starting to get pinging in the engine. how long have most of you guys who have done this mod dealt with it after switching to 93 octane was originally using 89. and how many still have this problem? btw i have a 99 4Runner limited 3.4 l v6

When I ran just the deckplate, (I run a LOT more now) I never had issues with pinging and stuck with the low octane (87 out here) fuel.

I'd look at other causes of ping. Plug wires, fouled plugs, bad gaps on plugs, fouled fuel (how many tanks has it been pinging through?)...

How bad is the ping? Does it stop if you put the deckplate back in? What else has changed in the last few weeks? Did you use a fuel treatment or anything like that?

i have run through only one tank of gas. never put any engine treatment nor any other type of fluids in the engine yet. with the deckplate on or off it is starting to make thwe noise the only thing cxonsistent with this peroblem is that it gets louder as i accelerate. was thinking about changing the spark plugs soon too but dunno how much that may help

Well, if it's doing it with the deckplate on, then the deckplate probably doesn't have much to do with the problem.

How many miles are on the engine, and how many miles are on the latest plugs?

Keep in mind that what you hear as "ping" or "knock" is actually predetonation which is where the air/fuel mixture is exploding before the plug fires. The biggest cause of that is excessive heat in the cylinder which can be caused by things like fouled plugs as well as electrical issues like bad wires (they're arcing between themselves), bad ignitor packs (on our engines)...

You say that it gets louder as you accelerate... so is the ping _always_ present? That's odd... Are you sure it's ping and not something like valve knock or even an exhaust leak?

engine has 90k on it just had the water pump & timing belt changed. sparlk plugs have about 40k on em. i know itsnot an exhaust leak and pinging is there only if i am accelerating. any idea of what type of plugs i could or need to change?

I had pinging at first too. It went away after a few hundred miles (I also did a MAFS cleaning, TB cleaning, and other maintenance), and I went back to 87 octane.

Make sure your engine is in tip-top shape as Mark is alluding to.

The "right" plug is a Denso Iridium, but they're pricey. I bought my set from eBay and saved a good chunk of change:

http://motors.search.ebay.com/_W0QQs...arkplugssource

Just look for a set of six Denso IK16's, IK20's or IK22's (stock, one step colder, or two steps colder respectively).

You also may wanna try resetting the ECU and see if that helps. Your timing may have drifted out far enough that it's taking a while to come back around.

yup did the reset. so i gather from most people that this is not a common occurrance that i should not have had any problems.

No it is not common (unless you forget to reset the ECU).

I heard that you are not supposed to switch to a higher octane say from 87 to 93. That is what may cause the ping or engine noise. There really is no need for the 3.4L to use 93 its not a high output engine. Thats what i heard and makes sense

Ummm, actually, a higher octane fuel burns slower which will _reduce_ ping. This is why tweaked engines (blowers, turbos, high compression) need it.

There are more than a couple of discussions here about what "octane" is. The SEARCH button is your friend.

You do not need to reset the ECU every time you take off or put on your deck plate. It will not change a thing. If that was the case then some of us would be resetting it all the time.
If you have pinging try to run a bottle of techtron through the gas tank and stick with 87 . It could be that you got some bad gas as mentioned above. Run the techtron through about 12 gallons of gas and then fill up with another brand and see what happens after running a few miles.
