hey, I know there has been many threads about gas mileage, but I need some more help. I have a 1997 4runner limited 4x4 and its pretty much stock (no lift or big tires yet). I have gotten a little over 200 miles on each of my last two tanks. I also added gum out fuel injector cleaner to my last tank, but that didnt help. I also just put in an amsoil air filter which should slightly help. But, this gas mileage really sucks!!! I cant even imagine what it will be like when put on my 33's. I guess I could change out my fuel filter, but what else should I do? I bet I could get around 250 miles per tank if I didnt have a heavy foot, but that still sucks.

Try cleaning out your throttle body and maybe adding another can of FI cleaner. The first bottle may have loosened the crap and the second bottle will help to blast it away. Have you done a tune-up lately? That might help as well. Changing the fuel filter would do your rig good as well.

Use a can of BG's 44K then change your fuel filter and maybe check the timing on the engine. Maybe plugs and wires too.

My truck has 95k on it and I've been getting no less than 255 a tank so you might just have a tuning issue.

I've been reading the posts about gas mileage and I must say they are pretty low. I get almost 300 miles to my tank, and that was before the tune up, fuel filter replacement, and throttle body cleaning. After I did those, I get pretty much the same, slightly lower after I removed the elbow. I must be lucky because I live in NY and I highway driving is pretty much city driving, so you can consider my tank city miles. Do all those things and you should see an improvement for sure.

Thanks ya'll! I guess I could change the fuel filter myself, but i dunno about the throttle body cleaning? I guess I will bring my runner in for a service soon and get new timing belts, water pump, spark plugs, and more. Hopefully all this will help.

Let me ask a dumb question...are you basing your "fuel consumption problem" on range (i.e. 200 miles) or are you doing the actual math; mileage/gallons used?

What I am getting at is that stupid fuel guage problem (which I have). I am just wondering if your gauge has reared its ugly head all of the sudden.

Regardless of the fuel gauge problem, I still get 230 - 260 miles per tank...so I guess you need a tune up either way.

Fill up and drive a whole tank without going over 2500 RPM (closer to 2000 RPM if bareable). I get about 300-325 per tank doing that as much as possible!

yea, I was kinda basing it on range. But, when I did the math after I filled up, I am only getting 14mpg.

r854rnr has a point. I usually don't accelerate over 2300 rpms, so that might help.

I think the general assumption is that he has not changed his driving habits dramatically, so driving under a certain RPM is not really solving the problem.

Good idea though - one I could never follow

Not accelerating over 2500rpm? Boy you guys must take forever to hit 60;I shift just under 4000 but part of it is I'm used to a sports car and can't stand loafing. I get about 270 a tank doing this plus I do some driving up in the foothills.

Thanks for that thread. I guess I will try some seafoam in my PCV valve. I will clean my MAF also because that looks easy.

What kind of milage are you supposed to be getting? Cause 14 sounds way low. I get 18-23 in my 88 4x4 pickup. And im not light on the pedal either.

you should get 16 around town and 18 on the highway. if you had a feather for a foot, you could expect 17.5 around town and 19.5 on the highway.

i always (well not always but often) say this when a gas milage thread comes up. the change with the biggest effect on milage is how heavy your foot is. (well that and how smooth you are when you drive). in my '89 22re now that we're on summer formula gas, i'm getting about 26 mpg 50/50 highway/city (kinda funny as i only get about 24 in my subaru legacy). in my '90 3vze i'm getting about 22-24 50/50 highway/city, and just for reference i did a long all highway drive over christmas on winter formula gas and got 27 mpg on the 3vze. i'm a fairly fast driver, but i'm very smooth, i never go 0 to full throttle very fast, or 0 to full brake very fast, change lanes smoothly, try to use the truck's momentum as best as i can to get a run down a hill before i go up, or coast through a turn smoothly before i power out. and if i were a slower driver, i'd do even better: when my girlfriend drives my cars she get 10-20% better milage. (she even does better with the subaru, she can get about 30 out of it - but that's because compared to my trucks the subaru is a race car and i drive it a little harder than i should).

now, i'm not saying that you shouldn't keep your engine clean and everything else that people are mentioning in this thread, but i don't think you'll see great improvements unless you change your relationship with the long skinny pedal.

I get a steady 23.5 mpg city highway combined .I drive about 70% highway .The only mod I have is 265 tires and K%N filter .I also have a 97 4runner with a 2.7 .

All this comparing the 4 cylinder to the 6 doesn't help tho'. 4 cylinder better be getting significantly better mpg.
