Dad needs help with son's Runner

Hey Guys & Gals,

'95 SR5, 3.0, V6, 140K, 4WD, Automatic -

Son coming home from work - said Runner was taching around 4K at 70 MPH. What he described sounded like tranny slipping but not happening on take off. Said OD IS working also.

Been hotter than he** here in Arkansas this year. Can the tranny fluid be getting too thin and lower pressure be causing slippage at highway speed?

Changed the fluid last year (Feb 2004) and only have a little over 8K on current fluids. Didn't change tranny filter when changed fluid.

Really appreciate all ideas or comments!!

Safety & blue skies,

DJ

Lol, got to the end of the post and my name was on the bottom of the post. I was like, "I didn't post this, what the heck!". Then looked at your screen name, and it makes sense know, haha.

BUMP for another DJ!

"DiverJeff200" and "blue skies" sounds like a skydiver to me! Been a few years since I've been in the air but still keep my subscription to USPA.

On to the truck, could be the A/T is toast, some of the older A/Ts had real filters, most of the newer A/Ts have a screen that you can clean with brake cleaner. I would drop the pan and take a look. If you have a lot of grindings in the pan it may be time for a rebuild. If that looks fine, clean the pan and magnets, then I would flush the A/T fluid which should take about 12 quarts. http://www.amsoil.com/faqs/faq8.aspx You may want to consider a A/T cooler, the largest Hayden you can fit will cost you about $50 at PepBoys. Good luck!

Keep your knees in the breeze!

Drain and refill or complete flush? Draining and refilling only gets about a third of the fluid. A waste of time. My guess is that the atf is toast. I had the same problem in the heat until I did the flush and changed the filter. Now all is well. Drain some out and compare it to some new fluid. Color and smell.

the 1st thing i thought was the OD wasn't engaged, 4k @ 70 sounds about right for 3rd gear, i would take it out and try it, just a thought, start at the bottom and work your way up. someone telling you and you experiencing it are sometimes 2 diff things

Try putting a Tranny Cooler (about $60) and then a Tranny flush. Much cheaper than getting it rebuilt if it cures your issues.
