Cylinder Trouble...

Hey There,

I am new to the thread and real green when it comes to mechanics, but I have fun nonetheless, so any help you guys might send my way is appreciated!!

I am looking at buying a 1989 Toyota 4Runner. It is in fair condiiton. I has a "newer" engine...dropped in after 120K, new catalytic converter, timing belt, transmission, transfer case, alternator, clutch and a few other modifications. The problem is is that after the previous owner had his father do some work to the engine, the first cylindar dropped out and he noticed that oil was firing out of the filler cap (tons of back pressure there for some reason?).

What might be causing this, and is this a major expense to fix? We haggled the price down, but I certainly don't need to drop $1,500 into the work. Any suggestions???

Thanks!
Chris

Cracked piston ring. Not cheap.Check compression on it but sounds like the piston ring is shot.Sounds like it someone is pulling your leg about the newer engine.Stay away from this truck if you dont know how to work on them.Spend more money and get a better vehicle. This one needs a complete engine overhaul and no telling what else. Its worth about 500 bucks and its going to cost about 5000 to take it and have it fixed right.Cheaper to buy one in better shape to begin with.If you cant live without it.At least take it to a good mechanic and let him look it over before you buy it.Guys beware. There are a lot of vehicles coming on the market from down south that have been flooded out, cleaned up the title and are for sale.
